Some video games offer the reassurance of extra lives, letting players resume action right where they left off when their character dies. Others provide no such safety net — and some of the best are better for it, building on permadeath to create a truly unique experience with real stakes.

If the thought of permanent death gets your heart racing in all the right ways, here are 10 games featuring that mechanic worth seeking out as soon as you can.

Rogue Legacy 2

In the original Rogue Legacy, players assume the role of a whole line of heroes, all exploring a dark castle in search of a cure for an ailing king. Each time a family member dies, their child takes up the hero’s mantle — gaining advantages that might allow them to succeed where their ancestors failed, but also potentially suffering from unexpected new limitations.

Every new run builds the family fortune, granting resources that should eventually lead to success. 2022’s Rogue Legacy 2 revisits the concept with additional polish and a much deeper narrative.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Released in 2011, The Binding of Isaac is a game from Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl about a little boy who flees to the basement after his God-fearing mother turns homicidal. Fearing for his life, he battles nightmares while negotiating an endless series of mini-dungeons.

A significantly expanded package, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, was released in 2014 to provide players with new collectibles and features. It launched on PC before reaching the Switch, Wii U, PS4, Vita, 3DS, and Xbox One.

Canabalt

Canabalt was made to be played with one hand — or just a single button used to make your character jump. As your sharp-dressed hero sprints across city rooftops, leaping between crumbling structures and obstacles, his urgency steadily increases along with his speed.

Your goal is to get as far as possible before turning into “a fine mist.” Your score is the distance traveled before disaster finally strikes. It launched on Android, iOS, PC, and PSP.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The Fire Emblem games have famously incorporated permadeath since the very beginning. You can play pretty much any of them with that mechanic enabled, though later ones make it optional — not everyone likes to sink hours into a character’s development only to lose that connection forever when a battle goes wrong.

The Divine Pulse ability lets you rewind your previous actions for a chance to set things right. Fire Emblem: Three Houses makes a loss even more difficult to bear, as players may grow close to characters during the slice-of-life events between battles.

Darkest Dungeon

An ancient evil slumbers beneath your ancestral home — that’s the premise of Darkest Dungeon, a turn-based RPG where you send adventurers on what might well prove a suicide mission. First you deploy them to surrounding dungeons, where they can find loot necessary to rebuild the local town.

Then you send them to their doom, equipped with powerful new weapons and armor but probably not prepared for the eldritch horrors they will encounter. With determination and enough heroes lost, you might gain the knowledge needed to conquer great evil — or they might all die once again.

Heavy Rain

In Heavy Rain, you play as a man whose young son goes missing at a park. From there, you launch an investigation to find him and bring him home — having already lost one son years earlier to a car crash.

You’ll meet a cast of strangers also investigating for their own reasons, controlling each along the way. Along the way, pretty much anyone can die — and if they perish, the story doesn’t grind to a halt. It keeps going without a key character to make connections you might desperately need. It launched on PS3, PS4, and PC.

Until Dawn

Originally planned for the PlayStation 3 but eventually released on the PlayStation 4 instead, Until Dawn is a slasher-inspired horror game following several young friends reunited at a remote lodge where terrible events transpired one year prior. On that fateful evening, two sisters fell off a cliff while fleeing from a stranger with a flamethrower.

During the events that follow, any or all of them might become the next victims and pay a permanent price for their shortcomings. The game saves automatically at various points, so bad decisions cast long shadows over your experience. Sony also published a remake in 2024 for PlayStation 5, though the original version is what really brings the horror home.

The Quarry

The Quarry takes Until Dawn but sets it in an idyllic summer camp. Developed by Supermassive Gry, it’s the ambitious spiritual successor to the team’s earlier success story.

Cinematic inspiration comes from slashers like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp. Players are tasked with making sure young characters live to see the next day — but if the worst occurs, those characters are gone for good at least on your initial trip through the game.

Don’t Starve

Don’t Starve drops players in a hostile wilderness environment without directions, leaving them to find a way to survive. Three meters monitor hunger, health, and sanity — if any drop too low, it’s a problem.

You’ll spend daylight gathering resources necessary to survive the night, huddled near a fire hoping the shadows outside your line of sight don’t converge on you. The longer you survive, the better your resources become, though you’ll face harsher weather and greater danger with the passage of time.
