IO Interactive has officially announced a significant delay for its Nintendo Switch 2 port of 007 First Light, confirming the adaptation will now launch in March 2027 rather than the summer window many players anticipated. The studio revealed that the extra development time is being dedicated to polishing the game and optimising performance specifically for the new console, with an exact release date yet to be announced.

The announcement marks a notable shift from earlier expectations, as the Switch 2 version was widely expected to arrive this summer following positive reactions during recent public playtests. IO Interactive made the confirmation through its official channels, directly addressing fans who had been eagerly awaiting Bond’s reimagined origin story on Nintendo’s latest hardware.

A Delay That Surprised Many

The timing of the delay is particularly unexpected given that 007 First Light was recently playable on Switch 2 at Gamescom, where it drew favourable reactions from attendees. The studio has since taken the same demo to Tokyo Game Show this week, a move that had suggested development was proceeding along schedule toward an imminent launch.

Despite the smooth progress evident at these major industry events, IO Interactive never formally committed to a specific release date beyond its general intention to bring the game to Switch 2 sometime during the current summer. That ambiguity briefly resolved in late July when a September 16th release window appeared on Amazon Japan’s listings—a date just one day away from arrival—leading many observers to assume an imminent launch.

“We know many of you have been looking forward to experiencing Bond’s reimagined origin story on Nintendo Switch 2, and we greatly appreciate your enthusiasm. To ensure we deliver the quality of experience players expect, we have made the decision to delay the release to March 2027, with the exact date to be communicated later. This additional time will go toward polishing the Nintendo Switch 2 performance of the game.”

Building on a Strong Foundation

The studio emphasised that its decision stems from a commitment to quality rather than any technical difficulties. According to IOI’s statement, the positive reception at Gamescom served as confirmation that the game is progressing well across all platforms, not just the Switch 2 port.

“We were thrilled by the positive feedback on 007 First Light at Gamescom, and it’s a great sign of the progress being made across the whole game as we head toward launch,” IOI continued. “We will share further updates as soon as we are ready. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support.”

The delay comes against the backdrop of strong commercial performance for 007 First Light, which launched in May and has since sold more than four million copies across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s console versions have been well received by critics as well.

Looking Ahead

The extended timeline also provides an opportunity for IOI to ensure the port matches the quality of its other platform versions, which received praise during critical coverage. In Eurogamer’s review of 007 First Light, Rick Lane highlighted the game’s emphasis on action and spectacle compared to Interactive Outlines more cerebral Hitman series, concluding that IO Interactive was absolutely the right studio to create a modern James Bond experience.

As the industry turns its attention to Tokyo Game Show this week, where 007 First Light continues to draw interest, players will be watching closely for any further developments on the Switch 2 release. The studio’s commitment to polishing rather than rushing the port suggests that those waiting until March 2027 may ultimately receive a more refined experience.
