Steam’s New Sims Competitor Is Killing It And Fully Of Funny Bugs

bekir May 27, 2026 2 min read 53 views

Paralives, the fresh indie challenger to The Sims crafted by a Canadian studio, burst onto the scene in early access this Monday and immediately captured the attention of gamers worldwide. Within just eight hours, the title sold a staggering 250,000 copies and boasts an impressive 89 % positive rating on Steam.

Analysis: The rapid sales surge and high user approval signal a strong appetite for alternative life‑simulation experiences, potentially reshaping the market dynamics traditionally dominated by The Sims franchise.

Having spent several hours exploring Paralives, I can confidently say it presents a compelling substitute for The Sims. The developers have pledged a no‑pay‑to‑win model, offering all content through free updates rather than paid DLC.

Key features such as pets, dynamic weather, and even horses are slated for inclusion during the early‑access phase—elements that, in The Sims 4, required costly add‑ons that often exceeded the price of a full game. Moreover, beloved community requests that never materialized in The Sims, like cars, boats, and bikes, are being delivered to Paralives at no extra charge.

As with any early‑access title, glitches are inevitable. I’ve encountered a few, including my character—my Para—teleporting after sitting down and then getting stuck walking in place for extended periods. There are even more intriguing bugs, such as mysteriously growing stairs that change the layout of a house between sessions.

Even the most minor glitches can feel downright unsettling, especially when mirrors unexpectedly expose the raw, unskinned forms of Paras.

The developers behind Paralives have been upfront with their first players, warning that early‑access will come with its share of rough edges. They’ve also committed to rolling out a series of bug‑fixes and quality‑of‑life enhancements between June and September.

While some gamers may be annoyed by the launch‑time issues, I’m genuinely excited to see a Sims‑style competitor that feels solid and untainted by the overreliance on generative AI seen in titles like InZOI.

Admittedly, I find these early‑access quirks oddly endearing—so long as they’re addressed promptly. They harken back to the quirky patch notes of The Sims 3, where oddities like “kleptomaniac Sims can no longer steal subway stations from lots” were part of the charm.
