This ambitious project draws inspiration from classic works like The Odyssey and promises a unique blend of adventure, humor, and heart.
A World Inspired by Myth and Legend
Katherine Rundell, the author behind the beloved series, revealed in an interview that the upcoming film will be heavily influenced by cinematic giants like Steven Spielberg. “We have so many touchstones of truly great movies,” she explained. “Some are obvious delights, like the BBC adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. There’s also work with such warmth and wit that we learn from, like the best Pixar and Spielberg films.” The third book in the series, The Neverfear, was recently released on September 1st. Rundell plans to take a break before writing the next installment, dedicating time to developing her first screenplay for the film adaptation.
The sheer variety of creatures featured in Rundell’s books presents a significant challenge for the special effects team, but the author remains optimistic. “We are just going to make the story as emotionally true, powerful, and funny as possible,” she said. “Disney has 100 years of experience imagining these things into being, so I am very much trusting them to bring them to life.”

One of the defining characteristics of Rundell’s writing is her ability to balance serious themes with laugh-out-loud humor. “The thing I love about writing for young people is that you can talk about quite serious things like power, dread, evil, and a lust for control,” she explained. “You can also have comedy. When you write for children, you owe them jokes.” This playful approach helps to make the stories accessible and engaging for readers of all ages.
This unique blend of humor and heart is evident in the diverse range of creatures featured in the books. From the bizarre bonnacon, a bull with inward-curving horns described as defending itself with noxious gas, to more familiar mythological beasts, Rundell’s imagination knows no bounds. The author has been collecting ideas for these creatures since 2016, jotting them down in various notebooks and devices.
A Five-Book Epic
While the initial publishing deal was for a trilogy, Rundell has decided that five books are needed to fully realize her vision. She has already written the ending and several key scenes, with plans to release the fourth and fifth books approximately one year apart. The story will continue to explore the protagonist Christopher’s deep connection with animals as he navigates the complexities of his world.
“It really is bound up with the desires of my own childhood and the desires of so many children I know,” Rundell shared. “When my niece plays Dungeons & Dragons, she’s always an elf druid who can talk to animals.” The author’s commitment to creating a truly immersive and unforgettable experience is evident in her meticulous planning and unwavering passion for the project.
