But how long will it take to experience this reimagining of the classic RPG? At Gamescom 2026, Polygon got some answers about playtime expectations for the upcoming title.
A Focused Narrative or Endless Possibilities?
RPGs are known for their sprawling worlds and hundreds of hours of gameplay. However, the new Fable aims to offer a more focused experience while still providing plenty of depth. During a Q&A session at Gamescom, Polygon learned that completing the main story will take approximately 20 hours. This is great news for players who want a satisfying RPG experience without committing to an endless grind.
However, don’t let that number fool you into thinking this is a short game! The developers emphasized that engaging with the side content, exploring the open world, and interacting with the previously teased NPCs can significantly extend your playtime. Associate Game Director Will Kennedy highlighted the “limitless” nature of the life systems, suggesting players can truly immerse themselves in Albion for as long as they desire.
“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy explained. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.”
Another attendee aptly described Fable as “not a huge game,” prompting Associate Game Director Craig Littler to reinforce the flexibility: “As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do.”
Ultimately, this new Fable promises a unique blend of focused storytelling and emergent gameplay. Whether you’re looking for a concise RPG experience or an expansive world to get lost in, it seems like Playground Games is delivering a title that caters to both playstyles.
