During a pivotal scene in Avengers: Endgame, future Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) convinces Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) to let him borrow the Time Stone. This allows the Avengers to undo Thanos’ snap, but with a crucial condition: they must return the Stones exactly as they found them. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), true to his word, travels back in time to fulfill this promise, ultimately choosing to remain in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). While this provided closure for Cap, it also left fans yearning for more about the intricacies of returning each Stone.
The prospect of exploring what happened when Captain America returned the Soul Stone is particularly intriguing, given its connection to Red Skull. This is where Ross Marquand’s pitch comes into play. He envisions a series that delves into the challenges and awkward encounters involved in restoring balance to the universe after Thanos’ devastating actions.
Marquand’s Vision: A Seven-Part Animated Series?
In a recent interview with Polygon, Ross Marquand, who also voices Professor X and Apocalypse in “X-Men ’97,” shared his passion for this untold story. He has been actively pitching the idea to Kevin Feige for years, hoping to bring it to life. While he hasn’t received confirmation yet, his enthusiasm is undeniable.
“I have no idea what Kevin Feige and, for that matter, Chris [Evans], have in mind for that, but I’ve been pitching it for the last eight years,” Marquand revealed. “So far, I haven’t heard if there’s an interest there, but I really hope there is, because even if it’s like a seven-part animated series, I think that’d be fun to watch.”
Marquand’s vision for the series involves dedicating an episode to each of the six Infinity Stones. He suggests starting with a setup episode where Bruce Banner and Captain America strategize before embarking on their mission. The final episode would focus on the Soul Stone, featuring a potentially awkward reunion between Captain America and Red Skull.
Awkward Encounters and Infinite Knowledge
Marquand elaborates on the potential awkwardness of Captain America encountering Red Skull after his long imprisonment. “For one, Cap would surely think that Red Skull was dead by this point,” he explains. He envisions a shift in Red Skull’s demeanor, moving from the defeated persona seen in “Infinity War” and “Endgame” to someone who has been burdened with infinite knowledge for decades.
“It would be massively awkward,” Marquand says. “I would imagine awkwardness, then I would imagine a shift in the ghostly, almost defeated persona we’ve seen [of Red Skull] from Infinity War and Endgame — a shift of like, ‘Oh, I’ve been Atlas holding up the world for the last 80 years and now you have released me from this curse. Now it’s on.’ And we already know he can fly. We know he’s cursed with infinite knowledge. What else can he do? I feel like, once he’s free of the Soul Stone, there could be some really interesting stuff there.”
After Captain America presumably defeats the Red Skull, Marquand suggests, “the final episode would just be everyone’s hunky-dory or whatever. And then there’s like a tease of something sinister to come.”

While “Avengers: Doomsday” may touch upon some of these elements, Ross Marquand’s passion for this untold story remains strong. Whether or not his pitch will come to fruition is yet to be seen, but the possibility of exploring this crucial chapter in the MCU’s history continues to captivate fans.
