Exterminauts: Behaviour Interactive Blasts into Co-op Chaos with a Twist on the Battle Pass

Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind the horror juggernaut Dead by Daylight, is aiming to capture players’ attention with their new live-service title, Exterminauts. Blending the blue-collar charm of Ghostbusters with the intense action of Starship Troopers, this co-op shooter promises a unique experience. While drawing comparisons to Helldivers 2, Behaviour Interactive is putting its own spin on the formula, offering players the chance to earn in-game currency and unlock content without mandatory purchases.

A Battle Pass You Can Earn

“We’re planning to release our first batch of live content roughly a month after launch,” explained creative director Vincent Regimbald. “Players won’t have to wait long for new things to experience. We’ll also be announcing upcoming updates in advance. Think of it as short-term ‘Warbond’-like Battle Passes, and payment is entirely optional. You can earn the in-game currency by completing daily and weekly challenges.”

Regimbald added that these Battle Passes will offer new cosmetic items and weapons, but emphasized that most of these rewards are also obtainable through regular gameplay. Like in Helldivers 2, players can find premium currency fragments scattered throughout the maps, although accumulating enough to purchase everything will require a significant time investment.

Modding Your Mayhem

The mods in Exterminauts follow a similar philosophy. Regimbald revealed that these mods can dramatically alter weapon performance. “Mods can add elemental damage to your shots, provide instant reloads, or even boost critical hit chance,” he explained. “You can also create combinations with the devices you use and special weapons. We believe players will be able to tailor their playstyles significantly through mod selection.”

Passive Perks and Playstyle Customization

Beyond mods, Exterminauts also features “emblems” and “badges,” which act as passive abilities. These allow players to define their character’s class or playstyle. “You can focus entirely on devices, healing, or even ice damage,” Regimbald said. “These emblems will influence your gameplay significantly. For example, if you use an ice-focused emblem, enemies you freeze will explode for area-of-effect damage when you shoot them.” The combination of mods and emblems promises a high degree of customization and strategic depth.

Early impressions suggest that the mod system is a welcome addition, encouraging players to engage with the game for longer periods. While not necessarily revolutionary, Exterminauts looks poised to deliver a fun, lighthearted action experience with a strong emphasis on cooperative gameplay. The game is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
