Now, four years later, they’s back with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. This prequel continues the series’ knack for emotional storytelling but shifts the focus from stealth to more traditional action gameplay. While this change might not be for everyone, Polygon’s Willa Rowe praised the game for its excellent character work and detailed environments. If you enjoyed the first game, or are simply looking for a compelling narrative experience with beautiful visuals, Resonance is definitely worth your time.
Star Wars: Zero Company
The phrase “Star Wars meets XCOM” is a bold promise, but Bit Reactor’s Star Wars: Zero Company delivers on that concept with a systems-heavy tactics game that gives players ample opportunity to build out their ragtag squads of heroes. Critics, including Polygon’s own Elijah Gonzalez, are raving about the game, highlighting its ability to live up to XCOM’s legacy while expanding the Star Wars universe in exciting new ways. In fact, it’s currently sitting among the top five all-time Star Wars games on Metacritic! If you’re a fan of tactical gameplay and love the Star Wars universe, this is an absolute must-play.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: Vol. 2
If you’ve somehow managed to miss out on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, now’s your chance to rectify that! This PS3 classic is finally making its way to PC as part of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection: Vol. 2, alongside Peace Walker and Ghost Babel. While all three games are worth playing, Guns of the Patriots is a truly unique experience. The stealth-action game is surprisingly timely, offering a critical look at the military industrial complex while reflecting on the role video games play in perpetuating it. Its gameplay hasn’t aged perfectly, but that doesn’t detract from what might be one of the most thought-provoking and relevant video games available today.
Blood Dungeon
Looking for something a bit lighter? Blood Dungeon, from Wheel World developer Messhof, could become your weekend obsession. This lo-fi riff on Vampire Survivors transforms the bullet heaven formula into a 2D platformer. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s a well-executed and addictive treat that prioritizes high score chasing over pure survival. It quickly became one of my favorite indies of the year when I played it earlier this month, and I have a feeling many others will feel the same.
Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder
For those seeking a more strategic experience, Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder might be this week’s hidden gem. The title says it all: it’s a minimalistic city-building roguelike where you construct small towns and discover synergies between your buildings. Polygon’s Josh Broadwell perfectly described it as a cross between Cities: Skylines and Balatro, highlighting the strategic depth and potential for unexpectedly huge combos that make this game so compelling.
