After years of anticipation, rumors, and leaks, Rockstar Games finally unveiled the first gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6, poised to be one of the most significant games in history. And within that extended look, Rockstar cleverly integrated a commercial – an Arby’s parody, no less! While humorous, it triggered a sense of déjà vu for those familiar with Red Dead Redemption 2.
A Familiar Landscape
During yesterday’s nearly 30-minute gameplay reveal of GTA 6, I noticed something peculiar during a commercial for a comically oversized sandwich featuring deer, warthogs, and rabbits. Here’s the ad if you haven’t seen it or want a refresher:
“Wait a minute… I recognize those deer! Those warthog models look familiar!” I thought to myself. The realization dawned: Rockstar Games had likely used assets from Red Dead Redemption 2 to create this short commercial. And, unsurprisingly, fans quickly confirmed my suspicion.
In fact, someone on Reddit pinpointed the specific location within Rockstar’s open-world cowboy simulator where the studio recorded the ad.
Rockstar’s History of Recycling
This isn’t the first time Rockstar has cleverly reused assets from its older games to create in-game content for its newer titles. This practice dates back to Grand Theft Auto IV, released in 2008. Within that game, you can watch TV shows, and if you look closely, you can spot GTA San Andreas in some ads and programs, including shots of Las Venturas during a poker tournament.
