Look, I’m not going to lie and pretend I wasn’t completely blown away by the first proper look at Grand Theft Auto 6. The hype was real, and Rockstar delivered a trailer that lived up to it. Exploring Leonida with Birdman and Phil Collins on the radio? Sign me up for November! But honestly, something else stole my thunder at Gamescom this year.
The Game That Broke My Brain
If you blinked during Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live stream, you might have missed it. Tucked away between the Elden Ring clones and the AI-driven shooters was a trailer for something truly special: Pony Island 2. I caught a glimpse of it at The Game Awards last year, but this new trailer offered a stranger, more captivating look at a game that’s almost impossible to describe.

OK, got it? Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably have a million questions. What is this game? Why is it so weird? And most importantly: When can I play it?
What I can tell you is that it’s a sequel to 2016’s Pony Island, an indie masterpiece from Daniel Mullins that redefined what a video game could be. It shares DNA with Inscryption, Mullins’ award-winning deckbuilder, but both games are united by their commitment to breaking the fourth wall and delivering experiences that are equal parts hilarious and unsettling.
Judging by its new trailer, Pony Island 2 isn’t straying from that playbook. The clip starts with some genuinely creepy first-person visuals before exploding into a montage of retro minigames and unsettling FMV footage. If you’ve played Inscryption past its opening roguelike component, this should all sound familiar. (If not, go back and play more! You’re missing out.)
What is it about? Well, the Steam page only describes it as a “phantasmagorical voyage through time, myth, divinity, and video games.” That’s about as vague as it gets.
I sincerely love that this trailer dropped during the same week as the glitzy GTA 6 showcase. The contrast is stark, but it highlights why I find video games so exciting. There’s no rulebook dictating what a game has to be. It can either be the most expensive open-world experience ever conceived or something completely different, like Pony Island 2.
If I were feeling particularly bold, I’d say that GTA 6 and Pony Island 2 are more spiritually connected than they appear on the surface. They’re both craft showpieces pushing the boundaries of what the medium can achieve. Rockstar is achieving this through sheer scope and painstaking detail, while Mullins is dismantling genre conventions to reach uncharted territory.
Innovation is happening at every level of the industry, even if a showcase like Opening Night Live can sometimes make you feel like games have stagnated. Look beyond the mainstream, and you’ll find the antidote to your ennui. Pony Island 2: Panda Circus launches on April 27 for Windows PC.
