For nearly a century, Superman has stood as the quintessential superhero, an icon for countless fans worldwide. From his debut to his numerous appearances in live-action films and animated projects, the Man of Steel has consistently embodied hope and justice. But now, DC Comics is taking a bold step, introducing a new iteration of Superman that promises to be unlike anything we’सं seen before.
A Haunting New Vision
In “Next Level: One Shot #1,” writer Gerry Duggan, artist Fernando Blanco, and letterer Buddy Beaudoin present a chilling conspiracy involving genetically engineered clones of the DC Universe’s most powerful figures. While Wonder Woman and Batman also appear in cloned forms, it’s Superman who immediately grabs attention – largely due to his unsettling design.
As Superman himself explains, this clone had his eyes removed because “previous iterations of me with complete bodies were too dangerous.” This detail alone sets a dark tone for the entire story.
A Living Starro Within
The horror doesn’t stop there. Later in the issue, readers discover that this grotesque imitation of Superman houses a living Starro within its body. This alien creature can be deployed onto another person, allowing it to gather biological details crucial for the cloning process. The fact that these clones are only three weeks old adds another layer of unease.
The Loss of Humanity
What makes this new Superman truly terrifying is the absence of his core values. Superman’s unwavering commitment to humanity, instilled by his adoptive parents and nurtured throughout his life in Smallville, is what defines him. Remove that essential element, and you’re left with an immensely powerful being devoid of moral constraints.
This new iteration embodies that very nightmare. While evil versions of Superman are not entirely new to DC Comics, what Duggan, Blanco, and DC are creating feels distinctly different – a chilling exploration of power without responsibility.
