GTA 6: A First Look at Rockstar’s Most Ambitious Game Yet

Grand Theft Auto 6. The most anticipated game of the last decade. And somehow, I found myself at Rockstar North, about to watch co-studio head Rob Nelson play 30 minutes of the game. It’s a privilege few have been granted. Holy shit.

A New Era for Grand Theft Auto

After watching the latest TV episode-length “Extended Look” ahead of its Netflix debut – I nearly combusted keeping that secret from family and friends! – and another 30 minutes of live gameplay, it’s clear that GTA 6 is a multi-layered world of crime, exploration, side quests, and secrets. It’s more connected and finely tuned than any other game in the series. For starters, Leonida feels densely populated. Streets are full of NPCs who interact with Lucia or Jason in different ways. The map reveals an overwhelming number of icons for stores, opportunities, and activities. This is a playground that rewards exploration, where unguided adventures are as much a part of the GTA 6 experience as the story.

Crimes of Passion: A Bonnie and Clyde Vibe

The focus on Jason and Lucia creates a “Bonnie and Clyde” vibe. You can play as a couple, strengthening their relationship through interactions. While you can swap between characters like in GTA 5, spending time together builds affinity. However, there’s no dumping your significant other; the level of connection simply affects the story. This optional mechanic adds depth without forcing players to engage.

“They will remain partners in crime,” Nelson confirms. “You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other’s back – whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that. They will still work together. It’s really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out. Whether you’ve nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out.”

Jason and Lucia’s relationship also impacts gameplay. During crime sprees, you can separate to avoid police, or one character can back up the other if they get into trouble. Small interactions like texts and holding hands add depth. This optional mechanic adds depth without forcing players to engage.

Power of the People: A World That Reacts

When Nelson loaded his save, we were transported to a downtown part of Leonida. The streets, traffic, and sheer number of NPCs – all ready to scream curses at you – hit like a slap in the face. It’s enough to make you feel like an Amish kid on Rumspringer in New York. You overhear pedestrian dialogue, there are stores ripe for robbing, and everything is rendered with incredible detail.

This world isn’t just noise and style; NPCs have a wide range of tolerance. Taunt them, and they might attack. Pull a gun, and they might cower or escalate. This contrasts with previous GTA games where you were “all-powerful.”

“I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful,” says Nelson. “You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.”

Law, Order and New Criminal Profiles

The Wanted level mechanic returns, but now includes a “Criminal Profile” system. If spotted committing a crime, police will respond with descriptions of you, your car, clothing, and whether you’re alone or as a couple. Changing these details can aid escape.

“The streets in this game are narrower and more realistic,” warns Nelson. “Which, in addition to all the density of the traffic on the roads, makes driving slightly more challenging and requires a bit of skill.”

Stealing cars has evolved. While you can still hotwire any car, there’s now a system of stratification. Some cars require specific tools, while others are accessible after progressing in the story. This adds depth to vehicle acquisition.

“We have put some layers of stratification into the vehicles,” explains Nelson. “Previously, you could just press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted and take off. We felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table in terms of progression and decision-making for players. So now, you start off the game and there are certain parked cars that are not accessible to you until you get a bit further along with the story and you acquire certain tools to get into them, but you can always carjack any driver you see.”

“I think it gives all the vehicles more meaning, and you need to pay attention to what you’re doing a bit more,” he adds.

Satire in a Changing World

Don’t expect GTA 6 to have gone too domestic. The weird and wonderful satire is still present. NPCs shout unhinged things, there are TV ads, and social media returns. However, Rockstar faces the challenge of satirizing current events without them feeling dated.

“That’s a question a lot of people ask: how do you deal with satire in today’s world? I think there’s always stuff to satirize. As long as humans are humans, other humans will figure out ways to satirize what we do,” says Nelson.

Under the Hood: A Technical Marvel

The development of GTA 6 has been a massive undertaking. The team has doubled in size, and the game takes full advantage of the latest generation of hardware. Everything from facial expressions to the way Lucia moves is incredibly realistic.

“The density of GTA 6 has been an exciting challenge, but that’s also part of the reason why our team has doubled in size,” says Nelson.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on November 19.
