If you caught any gameplay footage of Exterminauts from Gamescom this week, you might have noticed some familiar territory. With its cooperative PvE gameplay and arsenal of powerful weapons battling hordes of creatures, it’s easy to see the parallels with Helldivers 2. But according to Behaviour Interactive, there’s more to Exterminauts than meets the eye.
The “Workplace” Difference
Speaking with GameSpot at Gamescom, creative director Vincent Regimbart acknowledged the similarities but emphasized key differences that set Exterminauts apart. “Our game is not war: It’s work,” Regimbart explained. “It’s a workplace that fights back. So there’s a thematic difference that we don’t want it kind of, to be too heavy on the player–to make it feel like everything is ominous and dire. You’re just here to do your 9-5 and get back out.” This focus on the mundane juxtaposed with intense combat creates a unique atmosphere.
Progression Reimagined
The team at Behaviour Interactive also saw an opportunity to refine certain aspects of the progression system, something they felt could be improved upon. “There are mods to your weapons, there are passives, there are a lot of upgrades, and there are a lot of different paths that you can take with a particular build. So we’re putting a lot more emphasis on that.” This suggests a deeper level of customization and character building than players might expect.
While the echoes of Helldivers 2 are undeniable, Exterminauts appears to be carving out its own niche in the cooperative shooter landscape with its unique thematic focus and refined progression system. Whether it can truly stand on its own remains to be seen, but the developers seem confident that they’ve created something special.
