In a recent interview with IGN, Jorjani highlighted two key factors that could allow games like Helldivers 2 to thrive even in the shadow of Rockstar’s behemoth.
GTA 6: A Console Exclusive (For Now)
Jorjani expressed his excitement for GTA 6 while also acknowledging its potential impact. “Rockstar makes ridiculous, high-effort stuff and it’s awesome that games like this get made,” he said. “On a selfish level I’m happy it’s not hitting PC right away, and that online isn’t dropping at launch. It means Helldivers 2 gets to keep crushing it in our own space, and is also why it won’t be the all consuming behemoth everyone’s worried about.” This strategic decision by Rockstar to initially release GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S creates a unique opportunity for other games, particularly those with strong PC communities, to maintain their momentum.
The absence of an immediate online component further solidifies this space. While the next generation of GTA Online is undoubtedly in development, its delayed release allows titles like Helldivers 2, which already boasts a thriving multiplayer experience, to continue attracting and retaining players without direct competition from Rockstar’s online juggernaut.
Jorjani also touched on Rockstar’s confidence in their approach. “Everyone in the industry right now is constantly pivoting strategies and obsessing over early player feedback just to survive,” he explained. “But Rockstar has the brand power to confidently take their time and run their classic play. They have the confidence and freedom to spend a decade doing things the old-school way because they know the core game will deliver. It’s going to raise the bar for sure.” This bold strategy underscores Rockstar’s unwavering commitment to quality, even if it means foregoing immediate gratification.
While Helldivers 2 is primarily a PlayStation Studios title and enjoys significant success on consoles, its strong presence on Steam demonstrates the resilience of PC gaming communities. The delayed release of GTA 6 online might actually benefit games like Helldivers 2, which have already established dedicated player bases.
