In a move that’s either audacious or delightfully absurd, Devolver Digital is throwing its hat into the ring on November 19th, the very day Rockstar Games unleashes its highly anticipated behemoth, Grand Theft Auto 6. But instead of trying to compete head-to-head with a sprawling open-world crime simulator, Devolver is offering something entirely different: “Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed,” a retro-inspired platformer that’s as charming as it is self-aware.
A Meta Masterpiece in the Making?
The marketing for “Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed” has been nothing short of brilliant, playing on the idea of a “remaster of the second remake of the original monochrome action-platformer starring the most famous video game mascot of all time.” Of course, none of that is actually true. There was no previous Volvy game, and while Volvy is undoubtedly Devolver’s beloved mascot, he’s hardly reached the legendary status of Mario or Sonic. This playful deception sets the stage for a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Developed by Doinksoft, the studio behind acclaimed 2D sidescrollers like Gato Roboto and Gunbrella, “Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed” is a Game Boy Color-style platformer coming to Steam. Volvy himself is a unique character, a rat-esque creature with one oversized hand and one tiny hand. He dashes, jumps, collects onions (yes, onions!), bounces off enemies, and battles bosses in a vibrant world.
Adding another layer of fun, Volvy can transform into “Swolvy,” a hulked-out version capable of smashing through obstacles. The gameplay trailer showcases this transformation and highlights the game’s tight controls and responsive movement.
The art style is a clear homage to the Game Boy Color era, with bold colors, pixelated graphics, and a catchy soundtrack. Volvy can dash through the air with his giant fist, burrow underground, or even hover using his tail, creating opportunities for creative level traversal.
While GTA 6 will undoubtedly dominate the gaming conversation in November, its $80 (or $100) price tag and initial lack of a PC release might deter some players. “Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed,” on the other hand, offers a charming alternative for just $5. It’s a perfect palate cleanser for those seeking something different.
And Volvy isn’t alone in daring to launch alongside GTA 6. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+ Online, a port adding online co-op, is also releasing November 19. So, if you’re looking for variety on that day, there are plenty of options!
