The hype surrounding Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls was palpable, promising a fresh take on the beloved characters. While the roster is generally well-balanced, one character seems to be consistently falling short of expectations: Danger, the sentient robot from the X-Men’s Danger Room. Let’s dive into why this seemingly cool concept is struggling to find its place in the game.
The Problem with Danger
Danger’s kit revolves around orb-like modules that she can deploy and detonate, offering some zoning potential. However, her mobility is arguably among the worst in the game. Unlike other characters who can run, Danger moves slowly, making it difficult to close the distance or escape pressure. While her aerial dash offers a mixup option, executing it safely requires careful planning and setup, something most other characters don’s need.
“Her zoning’s not that great, her air dash sucks, her buttons are whatever,” said fighting game streamer Cloud_805 while ranking the roster on Twitch. “She does have a good assault assist, the drill that’s very active, very plus, but she just has to work so hard. […] Dude, this poor fucking character got shot before she even had a chance.”
The technical reasons behind Danger’s perceived weakness might be obscure to casual players, but essentially, her complex setups are easily outmatched by characters who offer more immediate value. Some players claim she feels “made for a different game,” highlighting the disconnect between her intended design and the realities of Marvel Tōkon’s gameplay.
“You spend all this time setting up your bullshit for a stray Magneto car to just erase all your work anyway,” writes cuttin_in_town on Reddit. “Yes, I am mad. This character could be so fun if these artificial restrictions were not present. She doesn’t even turnaround instantly when doing an air H as you fly over the enemy’s head. She still attacks the other way like a dumbass. Horrible character to play. Holy shit.”
In Marvel Tōkon, a character’s worth isn’t solely determined by their performance as a main fighter. Some may rank poorly in tier lists but excel as assist characters, providing crucial support during combos or capitalizing on openings. From this perspective, Danger has some utility that even her detractors acknowledge.
Marvel Tōkon is still relatively new, so it’s possible Danger will receive significant buffs or reworks to improve her competitiveness. For now, she seems to have a niche as an assist character alongside more effective fighters. Hopefully, someone can dethrone Magik from her position as the dominant character on the roster soon because I could go a few days without seeing her sword smack me over the head.
