After watching a full quest demonstration at gamescom 2026, I’m more excited than ever for Playground Games’ take on Fable. While I haven’t yet had hands-on time with the game, this preview offered valuable insights into Albion and the stories waiting to unfold within it.
Bowerstone: A Familiar Yet Refreshed Setting
For those unfamiliar with the original Fable trilogy, Bowerstone is the capital city of Albion. It’s a location that has received a stunning visual overhaul. At the beginning of the gameplay demo, our hero, a young woman armed with a sword, approached the portcullis of the imposing city. The central keep towered over crooked buildings, creating a pleasing imbalance that reflected the struggle between good and evil within Albion. The askew rooftops, winding streets, and uneven cobblestones gave the world a handcrafted feel.
Bowerstone is more than just a pretty face; it’s a bustling city with over 20 businesses, from hairdressers to tattoo parlors. Playground Games wants players to create characters that feel deeply connected to this world. The demo began at the hero’s family home, a cozy cottage where she was greeted by her daughter, Daisy, and spouse, Elliott. Their loving interaction highlighted the importance of relationships in Fable.
The Quest for Heroes: A Taste of Combat
The quest led us to Briar Hill, where Isabel had turned the townspeople into stone. Our hero needed to gain access to the Heroes Guild in the capital. Inside, we met Humphry the Golden, a legendary figure now reduced to an alcoholic mess, played by Matt King (Peep Show’s Super Hans). He embodies the “never meet your heroes” trope.
Humphry needs our help; he’s indebted and about to be evicted. To gain his guidance, we need to retrieve ownership of the guild, which he lost in a gamble with Slick Ronnie, a local gang leader. This led us to The Poor House, Ronnie’s hideout. After talking to the clientele, it became clear that access to the back area required payment.
Once inside Ronnie’s office, we found the deeds to the guild, but our escape was interrupted by Ronnie herself. It was time for another fight, and this is where Fable’s combat truly shines. The fluidity of the action is impressive, with sweeping sword slashes, satisfying bow shots, a long electric whip, and conjured fireballs.
The encounter earned us a skill point, which we used to unlock magical blades – a familiar spell for any Fable veteran. This spell proved invaluable in crowd control during the fight with Ronnie’s gang. The ability to switch between melee attacks and ranged spells adds depth and flexibility to the combat system.
The demo concluded with a promise of more hands-on time with Fable soon. I’m eager to explore the world, interact with its characters, and experience the full range of gameplay options. The British humor, engaging story, and promising combat have me optimistic about Playground Games’ revival of the Fable franchise.
