Rockstar Games is pulling out all the stops for Grand Theft Auto 6, and a fascinating new report from Dazed magazine reveals just how deep their research has gone. From embedding developers in Miami to consulting with ex-criminals and law enforcement, Rockstar’s commitment to authenticity is raising the bar for open-world immersion.

Building Believable Characters

One of the key areas Rockstar is focusing on is the game’s NPCs. According to Dazed, these characters will feel “less like NPCs than ever before,” reacting more directly to the player and creating a truly immersive world. The infamous “Florida Man” meme, a staple of Miami culture, is also being incorporated, but with a more nuanced approach. Rockstar wants to capture the weirdness of Florida while also exploring the stories behind the headlines.

“We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve,” says Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North. This dedication extends to the game’s diverse cast, from “young and old, tall or short” to characters adorned with tattoos, piercings, and even plastic surgery. The virtual masses will also reflect the local environments, whether it’s the Little Cuba neighborhood of Vice City or the wilderness of Mount Kalaga national park.

Writer Michael Wiafe emphasizes the studio’s commitment to authenticity: “It’s easy to go in with a cynical view and say, ‘Well that’s weird, put it in the game,’ but we couldn’t just stop there. We have to bring a sense of discovery to the players too, not just repeat cliches that already exist.”

Researching Every Corner of Miami

To achieve this level of realism, Rockstar has assembled multiple research teams that have visited Miami and its surrounding areas over the past decade. A “dedicated research team embedded in the city” is also working on the game, meeting with “ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who’ll take our calls.” These conversations help developers understand the stories behind the city and create characters that feel authentic.

The research extends to Miami’s vibrant music scene. Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, cites “Miami bass” and artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red as influences. The team is also exploring the contrast between high-end clubs on South Beach and underground house parties in Overtown.

Fashioning a Virtual World

Rockstar has also enlisted the help of Miami-based stylist Jillian Carr since 2023 to design an in-game “fashion ecosystem” that reflects the “taste, lifestyle, affluence and individuality” of Miami and the US as a whole. As Carr puts it, “Vice City is built around vanity.”

The studio has also established an entire branch in Los Angeles dedicated to NPC dialogue, reflecting the game’s massive scope. The development team has more than doubled since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, and over 50 real-world street artists have contributed murals inspired by Wynwood, Miami.

Controversies and Leaks

Despite the excitement surrounding GTA 6, the game’s development has been marked by controversy. Rockstar faced criticism for its decision not to release the game on physical discs, limiting some gameplay elements to the £90 Ultimate Edition. The studio is also embroiled in an ongoing legal battle over alleged union-busting with scores of developers it fired late last year.

In addition to these controversies, GTA 6 has been hit by more than a dozen leaks, revealing details about gameplay and characters. Most recently, Rockstar launched subpoenas seeking user information from Microsoft and Discord in an attempt to identify the leaker. However, Discord has yet to receive its subpoena at the time of writing.
