The Uncharted series is renowned for its cinematic action sequences and globe-trotting adventures, but a former Naughty Dog designer has shed light on how the immense success of Uncharted 2 inadvertently created challenges for the development of its sequel, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Benson Russell, in a recent interview with FRVR, explained how the pressure to deliver another blockbuster led to some creative compromises.
The Shadow of Perfection
Russell revealed that while the iconic set pieces in Uncharted 2 emerged organically during development, the team behind Uncharted 3 felt compelled to replicate that formula. However, this time around, the approach was more structured. The designers initially brainstormed a list of ten to twelve potential set pieces, including the now-iconic cargo plane sequence. The plan was to narrow down the selection and integrate them seamlessly into the narrative.
Unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition. Almost all of the planned set pieces made their way into the final game, placing writer and director Amy Hennig in a difficult position. She had to find ways to weave these elaborate action sequences into the story, sometimes forcing creative contortions.
“It also kind of corners Amy [Hennig] a bit, right?” Russell explained. “Because it’s like, ‘Oh, these are the set pieces we want to do’, and she’s like, ‘Well, now I have to find a way to shoehorn the ship in, so I guess we’ll have pirates and they’ll have a pirate leader.'” This highlights how the focus on delivering spectacle sometimes overshadowed the narrative cohesion.
A Legacy of Spectacle
Despite these challenges, Uncharted 3 was a commercial success and received generally positive reviews, even earning a rare 10/10 from IGN at the time. However, it often ranks lower in player rankings compared to other entries in the series. The cargo plane sequence, however, remains a standout moment, so much so that it made its way into the recent Uncharted live-action film adaptation.
While Naughty Dog officially concluded the Uncharted saga in 2016, rumors persist about a potential Uncharted 5. Although their announced title is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog has confirmed that it has multiple projects in the works. As for when we’ll start to see those other games, it’s hard to say, but it wouldn’t be surprising if they follow Intergalatic in a relatively rapid succession.
