The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was a golden age for role-playing games, but amidst the iconic titles, some gems remained tragically overlooked. One such masterpiece, developed by Quintet (the studio behind ActRaiser and Illusion of Gaia), is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Announced at Pixel Arcadia last night, a brand new version of Terranigma is coming to modern systems, promising to introduce this classic to a whole new generation of gamers.
A Classic Rediscovered
While widely considered one of the best action RPGs on the SNES, Terranigma suffered from being released late in the console’s lifespan and never seeing an official release in North America. This meant that many players outside of Japan, Europe, and Australia missed out on this incredible experience.
Thankfully, Clear River Games is stepping up to change all that with a new version for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. This will be the first time Terranigma is officially released in regions where it was previously unavailable, giving players everywhere a chance to explore its magical world.
Not a Remake, But a Rebirth
For those who haven’t had the pleasure of playing Terranigma yet, rest assured that this new version isn’t a remake or reimagining. Instead, it’s an accessible re-release designed to introduce the game to modern audiences while preserving its original charm.
While some statistics will be displayed on screen in areas previously occupied by the original 4:3 aspect ratio, other unannounced features promise exciting additions for returning players. As seen in the trailer, the core real-time action and adventure that made Terranigma so beloved remains intact.

Artistic Legacy Continues
Adding to the excitement, Kamui Fujiwara, the manga artist responsible for the original character designs, has created new illustrations for the release of Terranigma: Rebirth. This is a testament to the enduring legacy of the game and its characters.
Coming Soon!
With the resurgence of retro gaming and the increasing trend of classic titles being remastered for modern platforms, there are still countless hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Terranigma is undoubtedly one of them, and this re-release has the potential to breathe new life into a beloved classic.
Terranigma: Rebirth is slated for release on Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC in 2027. Given the renewed focus on preserving physical copies of games, the fact that it will be published by Limited Run Games ( as noted on the game’s Steam page ) suggests that this title may also see a physical release in North America and other regions. However, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to confirm.
