Get ready to dive back into the world of Final Fantasy VII! At Gamescom 2026, Square Enix unleashed a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy VII: Reunion, giving fans a tantalizing glimpse of underwater combat, powerful “Weapons,” and so much more. This isn’t just a sequel; it’s a reunion with familiar faces in a whole new light.
A Message from Shinra
The trailer opens with a public service announcement delivered by none other than Rufus Shinra via Shinra News. He discusses the impending threat of Meteor and the “Weapons,” emphasizing humanity’s resilience in overcoming these challenges. The clip then cuts to scenes showcasing the devastating power of these “Weapons” impacting Shinra forces, followed by stunning pre-rendered sequences featuring Ruby Weapon, Emerald Weapon, and Ultima Weapon.
The footage also includes in-game shots of Tifa sporting Black Mage attire, a breathtaking sequence of Highwind facing off against a “Weapon,” and even a glimpse inside the submarine revealing the Huge Materia. We’re treated to an intense underwater battle scene where the submarine skillfully evades enemy attacks.
Exploring New Horizons
The trailer doesn’t stop at combat; it also showcases exploration! We see Cloud and his party parachuting from Highwind, traversing the world on Chocobos, and Yuffie venturing into a region that appears to be Wutai. These moments highlight the vastness of the game world and the diverse ways players will interact with it.
The dialogue throughout the trailer heavily revolves around the “Weapons.” Vincent Valentine’s narration sets a somber tone, stating: “The planet sees us as another threat to its well-being, and rightly so.” Cid counters with: “You call them planetary guardians, but I call them weapons of mass destruction!”
Release Details and FITS System
While the trailer is packed with exciting visuals and lore, it also reaffirms key release details. Final Fantasy VII: Reunion is still slated for a Spring 2027 launch on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC). The trailer follows the earlier reveal of Highwind and provides even more context to how Cloud and his crew will traverse the world.
Furthermore, the trailer introduces the “FITS” system, allowing players to customize each character’s gameplay style based on classic Final Fantasy jobs. This means you can finally live out your Gunslinger Vincent Valentine fantasy, or even transform into a Galian Beast! While details remain scarce, director Naoki Hamaguchi has expressed his desire to integrate elements from various Final Fantasy VII spin-off titles into the main storyline.
