I Can’t Believe I Missed Mortal Shell 2’s Best Item, Silly Me

[A cautionary tale for newcomers to Mortal Shell 2, highlighting a crucial item and offering advice from a seasoned player.]

So, you’re diving into the grim world of Mortal Shell 2, ready to face its challenges and uncover its secrets. You’ve heard whispers about its punishing difficulty, its intricate combat system, and its haunting atmosphere. But are you prepared for the biggest missed opportunity in the game? I sure wasn’t.

The Vatra’s Seal: A Game-Changer

Early on, after a bit of exploration and acquiring your first shell, you encounter Haros, who leads you to the Tar Golem. This fight is designed as a forced loss; it’s meant to teach you the ropes. You’re supposed to get wrecked, and that’s okay. But here’s the kicker: after the Tar Golem falls (or rather, after you fall), Haros saves your life and allows you to loot his corpse for the Vatra’s Seal.

The Vatra’s Seal is more than just a piece of equipment; it’s a game-changer. It hardens your body, nullifying incoming damage and freezing you mid-animation. This seemingly simple ability opens up incredible possibilities. Not only does it protect you from attacks, knocking enemies back if they dare to strike your hardened shell, but it also acts as an animation cancel. With perfect timing, you’ve got a perfect parry, dealing massive posture damage and setting up devastating counterattacks.

In Mortal Shell, this ability was tied to a specific shell. But in the sequel, when you loot Haros’ corpse, you can equip the Vatra’s Seal regardless of which shell you currently have equipped. It’s an elegant solution that adds depth and flexibility to the combat system.

My Epic Fail: Sprinting Away from Power

Having played the beta and knowing about the rewards, I had the option to skip the prologue and get a handful of goodies, including the Vatra’s Seal. But in my infinite wisdom (or lack thereof), I decided to replay the prologue “for old time’s sake.” And then, for reasons that still baffle me, I just… sprinted away from Haros’ body after the Tar Golem fight.

So, boom. Haros goes down, I move on, and before I know it, I’m inside Proxima, hookshotting from enemy to enemy and dealing tons of lightning damage. It felt good, but something was missing. Hours later, after exploring a significant portion of the game, I checked my seals and realized I didn’t have the Vatra’s Seal. A quick Google search confirmed my worst fear: once you leave the prologue area, there’s no way to go back and collect it.

A Plea to New Players: Don’t Be Like Me

So, dear player, I implore you: If you’re jumping into Mortal Shell 2 for the first time, make sure you loot Haros’ body. Even if you don’t end up using the Vatra’s Seal the entire game, you’ll be grateful to have the option. Because I don’t even have that.

On a brighter note, developer Cold Symmetry has released a pretty helpful patch for the game that makes some welcome changes, including nerfing bosses and increasing the amount of gold you find in the world. What’s not helpful, though, are the bear traps, which are getting on players’ nerves.
