Let’s be honest: Calvin’s mom in Bill Watterson’s timeless comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes, often gets a bad rap. While fans adore her mischievous son and his imaginative adventures, she’s frequently portrayed as the long-suffering parent, constantly battling Calvin’s antics and trying to maintain some semblance of order in their chaotic household. But is she truly deserving of all the criticism? We think not.
The Unsung Heroine
Calvin’s mom, a homemaker, is the bedrock of their family. She’s the one preparing nearly every meal (despite Calvin’s often ungrateful attitude), and she’s also his primary disciplinarian. While her patience is frequently tested by Calvin’s boundless energy and penchant for mischief, it’s important to remember that she’s also the one providing him with love, care, and a sense of stability. She’s often depicted trying to get him to go to school or losing her patience with his childish antics, which often puts her at odds with both the rambunctious young boy and the Calvin and Hobbes fans who mostly empathize with him.
There’s a ton of affection for Calvin’s dad. People love that, just for his own amusement, Calvin’s dad will make up absurd lies, like when Calvin asks his dad where babies come from, only for his dad to say “Most people just go to Sears, buy the kit, and follow the assembly instructions.” But Calvin’s mom — who, like Calvin’s dad, has no name — doesn’t get nearly as much love. Even Watterson himself has admitted that he underserved the character.
“Calvin’s mom is the daily disciplinarian, a job that taxes her sanity, so I don’t think we get to see her at her best,” Watterson once explained. “I regret that the strip mostly shows her impatient side, but I try to hint at other aspects of her personality and her interests by what she’s doing when Calvin barges in.”
Calvin’s mom can be just as funny as his dad, and it usually comes when the strip shows her impatient side. So to show her a bit of the respect that is so well deserved, we’ve decided to track down her best ever quote from the comic strip, and share a bit more of what’s so great about her along the way.
The Art of Sarcastic Parenting
Her temper can be very funny, both when it’s in use against Calvin (like the time he cut his own hair), as well as against her husband. For example, there is a recurring joke in the strip that Calvin’s mom wanted a girl. In one comic strip, Calvin messes up the house and Calvin’s mom shouts at Calvin’s dad, “It’s your fault we didn’t have a sweet little girl! Your stupid chromosome!! Not mine!!”
Visually, Calvin’s mom really shines when her temper goes into absolute madness, like the time Calvin somehow gets into the chimney and then drags soot all over the carpet. In comic strips like that, Watterson’s depiction of Calvin’s mom is absolutely unhinged, with her eyes bulging and her mouth agape. Some of Watterson’s funniest drawings are of Calvin’s mom freaking out.
But really, Calvin’s mom’s very best material isn’t when she’s completely lost it with rage, it’s when she’s fed up with Calvin and responds with biting sarcasm. For example, there’s one strip where Calvin fills up a water balloon and waits behind a tree all day for someone to come, but no one does. In the final panel, he’s getting tucked into bed by his mother and he laments, “I wish I had more enemies.” In reply, his mother quips, “I’m sure you will someday, Honey.” That’s a really messed up thing to say to a kid! It’s also a joke aimed squarely at the adults, especially the parents, reading the comic strip as I doubt any young child in the ‘80s or ‘90s ever understood.
But while that is deeply, darkly funny, it’s hardly her best ever line. Her funniest-ever retort might be the one from March 15, 1993. In this strip, Calvin’s mom wakes up in the middle of the night because Calvin is screaming for her, saying, “Mom! Wake up! Come quick!” When she gets to his bedside, he asks her, “Do you think love is nothing but a biochemical reaction designed to make sure our genes get passed on?” To which his mother sharply replies, “Whatever it is, it’s all that’s keeping me from strangling you right now.”
Also messed up and also hilarious.
That is a great punchline, but it relies heavily on the setup for the joke to work, so I wouldn’t say it’s her best ever quote simply because, on its own, it doesn’t hold up. This next one-liner from November 25, 1988, though, definitely does.
In the first panel to this four-panel strip, an angry Calvin cautions his mother, “Watch out, mom. I’m in a bad mood.” Her reply is simply, “Be in a bad mood somewhere else, ok? I’m busy.” Calvin, who is not adopted but likes to annoy his parents by saying he is, replies, “Hmph! I’ll bet my biological mother would’ve bought me a comic book and made me feel better instead of shunning me like you.” In reply, Calvin’s mom delivers her best ever line which stands fully on its own:
“Kid, anyone but your biological mother would’ve left you to the wolves long ago.”
Now that is a perfect quote from Calvin’s mom. It’s sharp, it’s funny, and it doesn’t really require the setup for the punchline to land. You just need to know who Calvin is for the joke to make sense.
When Watterson gave Calvin’s mom sharp lines like this one, that’s when she shined. Sure, there were great moments where she was sweet and comforting, but every mom in comic strips in those days was sweet and comforting. Calvin’s parents were great because they were different, they were exhausted, which any parent would be if they had Calvin for a son. Calvin’s dad dealt with it psychologically by amusing himself with lies to his kid, while Calvin’s mom dealt with Calvin by letting her anger out and saying sarcastic things that sometimes went over Calvin’s head. That’s when the character really shines and that’s why she deserves more love from the fans.
