The situation surrounding the GTA 6 leaks is still unfolding, and we’re providing a chronological rundown of events, including footage analysis and CyberLeek’s communications. We’re committed to keeping you informed as this story develops.
Early Preparations
Even before the first leak surfaced, some Reddit users believe that infrastructure for CyberLeek, including domain names and a cryptocurrency token, was registered as early as August 14th. The $CYBERLEEK token, along with its liquidity pool, website, and voting program, reportedly emerged around August 15th.
August 18: Jason’s Basketball Game and CyberLeek’s Manifesto
The first leaked clip, lasting approximately a minute, showed protagonist Jason Duval near an oceanside house seen in official Rockstar marketing. It showcased a “Focus” mechanic, where making a basket increased Jason’s Focus level, as indicated on the HUD. It remains unclear if this system is present throughout the gameplay or limited to minigames like basketball. The clip’s authenticity was initially questioned but seemed verified by Rockstar issuing DMCA takedown notices.
Accompanying the first leak were “commandments” from CyberLeek:
- Thou Shalt Not Sell Digital Preorders
- Thou Shalt Not Sell Fake Single-Player DLC
- Thou Shalt Preserve Single-Player Content
CyberLeek’s primary concern appears to be digital preorders, arguing they don’t benefit customers since the product is a digital download. It’s important to note that GTA 6 will not be released on a physical disc, despite the availability of premium editions.
Jason’s Road Confrontation
The second clip, titled “Random Video 1,” showed Jason driving before becoming involved in an altercation with an NPC. It appeared to show that a wide variety of items can be used as weapons, including a wrench.
CyberLeek also published images purporting to show the map of GTA 6’s city, Leonida. GTA mapping communities have extensively researched these images and found that numerous details align with years of reconstructed information from Rockstar’s official marketing materials. The map appears to be composed of stitched-together in-game screenshots.
August 19: Taser Video, Junkies, and Stop Killing Games
A third video showed Jason breaking into a facility and using a taser, a new weapon type for the series if present in the final build. The presence of a Tate McRae track released in January 2025 suggests this clip might be from 2025 or later. The clip also showcased Jason’s ability to clone keys or smash windows near vehicles. He collected a hat, and vehicle-health and fuel-status bars were visible.
In another scene, Jason and his friend drank beers on a boat while laughing about using a VPN – a rather apt comment given the circumstances.
A fourth video, titled “Junkies,” showed Jason kicking a police officer off a motorcycle, stabbing him, and driving away. It revealed a potential wanted level of six stars, not seen in GTA 5. He then approached a community living under a bridge, and as his wanted level increased, a warning appeared on the UI stating that the cops were looking for him and had his description.
The video also showed the use of “Zombix,” which apparently has a weaker effect on health with repeated use. Bystanders seem to have the ability to report crimes.
Stop Killing Games, an international consumer campaign advocating for publishers to maintain purchased games after official support ends, distanced itself from CyberLeek and its tactics, stating, “Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable to us.” It also urged people not to buy the CyberLeek memecoin.
The Polls Begin
CyberLeek has a memecoin called $CYBERLEEK that appears on all watermarked footage. This cryptocurrency’s value depends on internet speculation and attention, and CyberLeek stated that its token would fund a “secret project.” As an incentive for people to purchase the token, CyberLeek began running polls for users to decide on the next video they wanted to view. Whichever poll option had the most tokens purchased against it would be the next released footage. One poll asked users to choose between a car during the day, a car at night, a motorcycle at night, or a plane during the day. The plane won, with 64.4% of the total, leading to the release of the plane video.
August 20: Extended Gameplay and Further Threats
This video was particularly noteworthy as it suggested that the leaker might have access to a playable build of the game. As Jason flew over the city in a plane, it showed the density of the environment and new locations. Radio stations were scrolled through, providing a better idea of the GTA 6 soundtrack. The most significant moment was when the character appeared to be directly controlled, using gunfire to spell “Leek” on a nearby wall.
CyberLeek threatened to release further material, including potential story and ending spoilers, unless Rockstar and other publishers change their approach to digital games. Some of the videos featured watermarked threats such as, “No physical discs? Then more leeks!”
August 21: Subpoenas, Seeking Advertisers, and First Hypercar Video
Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, filed multiple subpoenas requesting that Microsoft and Discord assist in discovering CyberLeek’s identity by providing information on its users. One subpoena filed with the Southern District Court of New York showed that it was issuing DMCA takedown notices to “obtain the identity of an alleged infringer.”
Take-Two asked Microsoft and Discord to provide internal records before September 4th, including Discord account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, and linked connections.
A new “Contact” tab appeared on the CyberLeek website stating that the individual or group responsible was looking for funds through community support and strategic partnerships by selling ad space. It stressed that this was not a “ransom.” The fee to contact those responsible is 400 XMR (Monero), currently worth just shy of $165,450.
The next video surfaced, showing Jason driving the Truffade Thrax – a car currently in GTA Online – performing burnouts and engaging in irresponsible driving. It provided a good look at how the city might appear at sunset.
August 22: Strip Club Teaser and Fake GTA 6 Downloads
This video began with Jason driving the same hypercar, with smoke coming from the tires and engine. He then pulled into a gas station, refueled, and ran into the shop. Jason appeared to punch the shopkeeper and steal cash. He then robbed another gas station before crashing into a barrier. Afterwards, Jason was seen approaching a strip club. The watermarked message read, “3mil marketcap = stripclub,” interpreted as meaning that if the $CYBERLEEK coin reached a 3 million market cap, the full strip club video would be released.
Several copies of an apparent 113GB GTA 6 file were circulating online, but it appeared to be padded malware. Testers reported that the file was 99.99% empty zeroes, with the remaining space occupied by a 50KB virus. Downloading and opening this file would whitelist your entire C:\ drive in Windows Defender and disable security software.
August 23: Yet More Nudity, Wasted, and Lucia
A new clip showed leaked GTA 6 footage of a nudist colony in Leonida. Jason was walking near a pool and hot tubs while naked people danced nearby. Some weren’t bothered by his presence, but after he used binoculars to look at a woman, she physically attacked him.
The watermark read, “Do you want a Lucia-led prologue? CL has been evading spoilers.” CyberLeek put up another poll asking gamers to show up dressed as leeks in front of Take-Two and Rockstar offices while holding physical game discs.
