Statham is upfront about the fact that he hasn’t had the same level of formal training as some of his acting peers. He doesn’t try to be someone he’s not. He acknowledges that he’s “not really some thespian that can adopt and chameleon himself into different roles.” This self-awareness is part of what makes him so relatable, even when he’s dishing out bone-crunching justice on screen.
While he has occasionally ventured outside his comfort zone – notably in Paul Feig’s comedy-action film Spy and the meta-role as himself in Bullet Train – Statham generally gravitates towards roles that allow him to leverage his physicality and experience. “A lot of the characters I play are pretty similar in some ways,” he admits. “I get a lot of the physical roles because I can do all that. So there’s an authenticity with that, so I tend to stick with that.”
