The gaming community has been buzzing with speculation about a potential third installment in the critically acclaimed Ori series, but those whispers have now been officially silenced. Thomas Maher, CEO of Moon Studios and the creative force behind the beloved platforming adventures, has confirmed that rumors circulating online are simply “nonsense.” The studio’s attention remains firmly fixed on their upcoming action-RPG, “No Rest for the Wicked,” which is currently in Early Access.
Ori 3: A Myth?
The speculation seems to have originated from a post on Resetera, quickly spreading across various social media platforms. However, Maher’s direct response on X (formerly Twitter) puts those hopes to rest. While the possibility of returning to the world of Ori remains a tantalizing prospect for many fans, it appears that Moon Studios has other priorities at the moment.
“I can confirm that the Ori 3 rumors are nonsense,” Maher stated unequivocally. He even shared a personal anecdote, revealing that Gareth Coker, the talented composer behind the iconic Ori soundtracks, inquired about a potential third game during a recent dinner in Vienna while recording the soundtrack for “No Rest for the Wicked.” Coker reportedly said it was “time” to revisit the Ori universe, highlighting the enduring appeal of the series.
Looking Back at Ori and the Will of the Wisps
The last chapter in the Ori saga, “Ori and the Will of the Wisps,” served as a direct sequel to the groundbreaking 2017 release, “Ori and the Blind Forest.” Launched in 2020 for Xbox One and PC, it was met with widespread acclaim for its stunning visuals, emotional storytelling, and challenging gameplay. While praised by many, the game did launch in a somewhat rough state, prompting subsequent patches and improvements. The series has since expanded to include a Nintendo Switch version, but remains absent from PlayStation 5.
Moon Studios: Past Challenges and Future Focus
A 2022 report shed light on alleged issues within Moon Studios during the development of the Ori series, including claims of a toxic work environment and mismanagement. Studio leads Maher and Korol refuted these allegations. Since then, the studio has been entirely dedicated to “No Rest for the Wicked,” which entered Early Access in 2024. While the initial release was somewhat rocky, consistent updates and gameplay improvements have earned it overwhelmingly positive reviews from players on Steam. The full 1.0 version is slated for release this October, bringing the game to both PC and PlayStation 5.
