Japan’s premier indie gaming festival, BitSummit, celebrated an unprecedented turnout in 2026, according to the event’s organizers.
Held in Kyoto ahead of its customary July schedule, the festival drew a staggering 68,208 attendees over the weekend—a 17% surge from the previous year’s 58,065 visitors.
When compared to the 2024 edition, which attracted 38,333 guests, BitSummit’s audience has expanded by a remarkable 77%, reflecting the event’s expanding global appeal.
The 2026 lineup featured 125 curated general exhibitors chosen from roughly 550 international submissions, alongside 78 corporate participants, bringing the total to 496 exhibitors. The showcase spanned board games, cutting‑edge devices, and immersive game‑jam experiences.
As the official media partner for the event, VGC honored the standout title on the exhibition floor by presenting its own Media Highlight Award.
Chris Scullion of VGC presented the accolade to Sloppy Forgeries, a humor‑laden competitive painting game that captured the crowd’s imagination. A detailed review of the selection will be released later this weekend.
For a deeper dive into the event, Chris Scullion’s daily BitSummit reports offer firsthand impressions and highlight his favorite indie titles showcased at the show.
“BitSummit has grown in popularity with each annual iteration, and the massive queue of attendees winding around the Miyako Messe exhibition hall in Kyoto proved that this year’s event was the most attended yet,” he noted.
