Turning Cars into PokéStops
For the past week, I’ve been experimenting with mods that attempt to transform GTA 5 into a Pokémon Go-esque experience. The results have been… enlightening. One thing I quickly learned: anything hit by a car traveling faster than the speed of sound tends to explode. But more importantly, I realized Los Santos is a surprisingly lonely place. While GTA 6 promises a Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic, Franklin, Michael, and Trevor are largely isolated figures cruising the sun-drenched highways solo. That’s where the Pokémon come in.
I installed a mod that essentially turns Los Santos into a sprawling playground filled with digital creatures just waiting to be caught. The streets become populated (or rather, unpopulated) by people replaced by Geodudes, Charmander, and, theoretically, Pikachu. I say “theoretically” because, despite my best efforts, I never actually encountered the iconic yellow mouse.
Trevor’s Poké-Hunting Adventure
I’m fairly certain that only Trevor can engage in this bizarre form of digital critter hunting, or perhaps a previously installed mod has inadvertently broken this one. Regardless, out he went on Franklin’s motorbike, embarking on a quest for new companions. What news reporters might call “drive-bys,” I captured a Geodude and a Squirtle. The experience was… unique.
Charmander’s Unexpected Rebellion
However, not all Pokémon are willing to embrace friendship. Charmander, in particular, proved to be quite rebellious. Upon being captured, he broke free of my Poké Ball and began to curse at me in a thick Eastern European accent, just like in the anime. Our encounter was far from harmonious. We came to blows on the road, and I left him face-down in the tarmac after delivering what I’m sure was a powerful, albeit somewhat imprecise, right hook to his snout. Don’t worry, everyone; he’s probably just fainted.
