The gaming world has been buzzing with leaks surrounding Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto 6. Now, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, is firing back with a legal offensive, aiming to unmask the individual responsible for the unauthorized release of gameplay footage. This aggressive move signals a clear message: intellectual property theft will not be tolerated.
The Hunt Begins: Subpoenas Issued to Microsoft and Discord
On Thursday, Take-Two Interactive filed subpoenas in federal court, targeting both Microsoft and Discord. The goal? To obtain identifying information about “Cyberleek,” the hacker who orchestrated the recent leaks of GTA 6 gameplay clips. This legal action leverages the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to track down Cyberleek’s digital footprint across various platforms.
The subpoenas request a wide range of data from Discord, including backend server metadata, original message logs, IP access logs, email addresses, phone numbers, connected accounts, registration timestamps, linked connections (Google/Xbox/etc.), and device identifiers. From Microsoft, Take-Two seeks all internal business records related to the “cyberleek” persona, aiming to definitively identify the individual or entity behind the leaks.
Both companies are under strict orders to deliver the requested files and documents by September 4th at 10 a.m. EDT. This swift action underscores Take-Two’s determination to protect its intellectual property and hold those responsible for the leaks accountable. Kotaku was the first to report on this developing legal battle.
Damage Control: Taking Down Leaks, But the Threat Remains
While Take-Two has been actively working to remove leaked content from various websites, the threat of further GTA 6 leaks looms large. Despite the deletion of accounts and videos associated with Cyberleek, the hacker’s promise to release more unauthorized gameplay clips continues to cast a shadow over the game’s launch.
The previously released unofficial gameplay clips offered glimpses of one of GTA 6’s protagonists, Jason, engaging in the signature Grand Theft Auto brand of chaotic fun. These leaks, however, were not random acts; they are reportedly targeting Rockstar over a series of grievances, including concerns about Grand Theft Auto 6’s digital-only release.
Official Glimpse on the Horizon: Awaited Preview with Netflix
Fortunately for fans eager for an official look at GTA 6, a long-awaited preview is scheduled for August 27th, in collaboration with Netflix. This officially sanctioned glimpse will offer a much-needed respite from the unauthorized leaks and provide a clearer picture of what to expect from Rockstar’s upcoming masterpiece.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19th, promising an immersive open-world experience that will undoubtedly set a new standard in the gaming industry. The legal battle with Cyberleek highlights the challenges of protecting intellectual property in the digital age, but also underscores the unwavering commitment of Rockstar Games to deliver a truly exceptional gaming experience.
