The internet is still buzzing from the massive leak of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay footage this week, a digital earthquake that’s shaken the gaming world. While we’ve all been treated to glimpses of combat, basketball, and more, Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, is now playing detective, attempting to pinpoint the source of the breach. In a move signaling the seriousness of the situation, Take-Two has subpoenaed both Microsoft and Discord in an effort to identify those responsible for sharing the leaked content.
The Hunt for CyberLeek
According to a filing in the South District Court of New York ( via Kotaku), the subpoena aims to “obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers” involved in distributing Grand Theft Auto 6 material. The document explicitly refers to the leaked content as “copyrighted material,” effectively confirming its authenticity and dispelling any lingering doubts about a potential hoax. Adding another layer to this digital drama, the leaker, known online as CyberLeek, was also reportedly advertising crypto alongside the stolen gameplay.
The identity of CyberLeek remains shrouded in mystery, but speculation is rampant that they may have had access to a playable build of GTA 6. One particularly telling detail from the leaked footage shows the word “LEEK” spelled out using bullet holes on a wall, a clear and somewhat theatrical calling card. The urgency surrounding this investigation is evident in the subpoena’s timeline; Microsoft has been given until September 4th to provide any information it possesses related to the leaker. This includes details about Discord users involved in specific servers, such as account IDs, email addresses, IP addresses, phone numbers, and even linked accounts like Xbox and Google profiles.
A Shadow Over GTA 6’s Unveiling
The timing of this leak is particularly unfortunate for Rockstar Games. With the highly anticipated “GTA 6 ‘Extended Look'” set to air exclusively on Netflix on August 27th, the company was poised to finally unveil a comprehensive look at the game after years of speculation and anticipation. This leak undoubtedly casts a shadow over that event, potentially diminishing its impact and raising questions about the security measures in place within Rockstar.
We have reached out to Rockstar Games for comment and will update this story as soon as we receive a response. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19th, and while the leak is undoubtedly a setback, it remains to be seen how significantly it will impact the game’s development or launch.
