It might seem like a strange turn of events for a studio renowned for its punishingly difficult single-player experiences (and, let’s not forget, the Armored Core series), but FromSoftware has delivered some solid multiplayer titles in recent years. With the upcoming releases of Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods, it’s easy to wonder if the undisputed king of gritty single-player RPGs is shifting its focus entirely to live service games. But according to president Hidetaka Miyazaki, the combination of these two projects is purely coincidental.
FromSoftware Still Has a Heart for Single-Player
So, are we witnessing FromSoftware’s full-blown transition into the world of online multiplayer? Not quite, says Miyazaki. “It’s not necessarily some big reveal saying this is the direction we plan to go in moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did. It’s funny, because there was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other.”
While FromSoftware isn’t abandoning its signature single-player formula, Miyazaki seems genuinely excited about exploring new avenues: “Personally, it’s very fun to make a multiplayer game like this. It’s not something we’ve done a lot and we’re looking forward to seeing players’ reactions and getting feedback.” This sentiment suggests that while multiplayer might be a welcome change of pace, it won’t overshadow FromSoftware’s core identity.
But let’s be honest, what FromSoftware is truly exceptional at is crafting those moments of pure frustration and triumph that define the single-player experience – you know, the ones where you’re screaming at your controller because Starscourge Radahn’s lasers are filling the entire screen, and you’re desperately trying to figure out how to dodge them. Ahem.
“If anything,” Miyazaki concludes, “it’s like the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time, it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again.” This is fantastic news for fans eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Elden Ring saga. Perhaps a Sekiro 2 could be on the horizon?
