===GTA 6: No Disc? Take-Two Boss Defends the Digital-Only Approach, Drawing Parallels to Vinyl Records===

The gaming world is still buzzing about Sony’s announcement that future PlayStation games will be digital-only starting in 2028. Now, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games and developer of the highly anticipated GTA 6, has weighed in on the debate. CEO Strauss Zelnick defended the decision to release GTA 6 without a physical disc, arguing that it simply “doesn’t make sense for the consumer” in today’s gaming landscape.

The Digital-First Future: Why No Disc for GTA 6?

During a Q&A session following Take-Two’s recent financial release, Zelnick addressed the growing controversy surrounding physical media. While he didn’t directly comment on Sony’s specific move, his remarks clearly indicated that Take-Two is embracing a digital-first strategy for major releases like GTA 6. “Our business is well over 90% digitally distributed,” Zelnick stated. “It’s already a digital business.”

He further elaborated on the rationale behind this approach, highlighting the convenience and efficiency of digital distribution. “In certain instances, especially if it’s a big game, discs just don’t really make sense for the consumer,” he explained. “Also, most instances you have to register online to play anyhow. So if you’re already connected, who cares if you download digitally? It’s all the same and it’s much more convenient.” He drew an analogy to the music industry, suggesting that physical discs for games will become increasingly rare, similar to how vinyl records coexist with digital music.

This stance aligns with Sony’s recent defense of its decision to discontinue physical disc production. The company maintains that this move won’t negatively impact its business and is simply a reflection of the evolving gaming landscape. However, this announcement has sparked significant backlash from gamers concerned about video game preservation and ownership – Sony finally broke its silence on its decision to discontinue PlayStation discs.

The online community has been vocal in its opposition, with gamers signing petitions and flooding PlayStation’s social media channels to express their concerns. This controversy has even managed to overshadow the release of new games – even overshadowing the release of new games that have nothing to do with Sony’s decision.

Meanwhile, advocates for physical media have organized a week-long boycott in August – have called on gamers to boycott PlayStation for a week in August to demonstrate their disapproval. Other organizations, such as the UK’s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), have also criticized Sony’s decision, calling it “a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice.”
