Magic: The Gathering X The Hobbit Is Ready To Take Us On An Unexpected Journey

Wizards of the Coast’s newest Universes Beyond release, Magic: The Gathering X The Hobbit, transports players into Tolkien’s world by chronicling Bilbo Baggins’ unanticipated trek from the cozy Shire to the glittering depths of the Lonely Mountain. Building on the earlier The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle‑earth, this edition offers a tighter narrative, featuring dwarven allies, cryptic riddles, hidden riches, and, of course, a colossal dragon.

With the support of Wizards of the Coast’s Magic team, we were privileged to preview a selection of Magic: The Gathering X The Hobbit contents, evaluating the allure of this new saga and whether it will be worth abandoning the Shire for.

The release is packed with a rich assortment of offerings for both players and collectors: Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, and various bundles, plus a Gift Bundle, a Draft Night set, and two fresh Scene Boxes. While many items echo the familiar structure of previous Magic sets, several stand out for their alignment with The Hobbit’s narrative emphasis and the communal spirit of adventure.

A standout feature is the Draft Night set, an all‑in‑one, four‑player drafting kit built around Magic’s Pick‑Two format. Inside are 12 Play Boosters, a Collector Booster, 90 basic lands, and every component needed for a full drafting session, effectively transforming a box of cards into a complete game‑night experience. This concept dovetails nicely with the set’s opening premise of dwarves arriving unannounced at a house.

Additionally, two Scene Boxes—Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug—each assemble six foil, borderless cards that merge into a larger tableau depicting Bilbo’s journey.
