Amazon has just ghosted its MMOs in its latest move to give up on gaming

However, this transition is slated for early 2027, meaning Amazon will continue to dominate publishing duties in the interim.

In contrast to Throne and Liberty, users risk losing communications, friend lists, blacklists, and other personal data, though their characters and progress remain intact unless they choose to decline the data‑transfer agreement with Smilegate.

When the title returns to its original developers, Amazon will formally exit the MMO arena, a move that aligns with the planned closure of New World: Aeternum—Amazon’s in‑house MMO that halted development last fall. The shutdown, coupled with the termination of its publishing agreements, will markedly shrink Amazon’s portfolio and overall influence in the genre.

To date, Amazon’s venture into gaming has yielded limited results. The company performs far more effectively when it delegates its intellectual property to external partners, as seen with titles like 007 First Light and Tomb Raider. While I’m no corporate strategist and the complexities of late‑stage capitalism elude me, it seems prudent for Amazon to focus on licensing its vast array of IPs acquired through mergers and acquisitions rather than attempting to micromanage its own gaming division.

The recent performance of the title has been underwhelming, and given that historical performance often predicts future outcomes, it’s unlikely to see significant improvement.
