Stop Killing Games Joins Lawsuit Against Sony’s Digital ‘Monopoly

Stop Killing Games, a decentralized global movement championing legal safeguards for consumers against the deliberate erasure of video games, and preservation advocate DoesItPlay have formally pledged to back Stichting Massaschade & Consument’s “Fair PlayStation” class action in the Netherlands. The lawsuit accuses Sony of imposing a “Sony Tax” on PlayStation owners by restricting game sales exclusively to its own digital storefront.

In a post shared on X last night, Stop Killing Games and DoesItPlay confirmed their alliance with SM&G’s lawsuit, echoing the coverage first reported by GamesRadar.

On its official YouTube channel, SKG announced, “SKG and DoesItPlay are joining forces to support SM&C’s lawsuit against Sony over its complete control of PlayStation Store pricing.” They added, “We are lending our full weight to SM&C’s case in the Dutch court. SM&C must demonstrate to the court that it truly represents gamers, not merely makes claims. Our endorsement reinforces that representation globally, and every Dutch gamer who signs on strengthens the case.”

The call to action is clear: “It’s time to sue Sony.” Both Stop Killing Games and DoesItPlay invite gamers to join the class action, with a tweet linking to the movement.

In early 2025, the Dutch consumer‑rights organization Stichting Massaschade & Consument (SM&G) launched a collective action lawsuit against Sony, alleging that the company’s dominance over the PlayStation Store amounts to a monopoly that harms consumers.

The complaint echoes the UK’s “PlayStation You Owe Us” case, accusing Sony of exploiting its control of the digital game marketplace to the detriment of players and developers alike.

Now, following Sony’s announcement that it will cease producing physical PlayStation media in January 2028, SM&G argues that the shift to an exclusively digital ecosystem will only magnify Sony’s monopoly, tightening its grip on the market.

According to SM&G’s official website—translated from Dutch—the organization claims that Sony will further consolidate control over pricing, sales, and conditions for new PlayStation titles, while the move away from physical media will effectively eliminate the second‑hand video‑game market.
