About this game

The Genre Genesis: From Modern Titans to 1990 Pioneers

Vertical military shoot-’em-ups (shmups), color-coded weapon power-up cycling (Red Vulcan vs. Blue Laser), delayed-fuse thermonuclear screen-clearing bombs, and high-velocity sniper bullet dodging—from Raiden II/DX/V, Strikers 1945, DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, and Touhou Project to modern vertical arcade shooters—trace their undisputed royal genesis to April 1990 with Seibu Kaihatsu’s Raiden.

Conceived and directed by Tetsuya Kawaguchi with programming by Akira Sato and an immortal, driving FM synthesizer soundtrack composed by Go Sato (featuring legendary tracks like “Gallantry” and “Lightning War”) for Seibu Kaihatsu on custom 68000 arcade hardware, Raiden was an earth-shattering coin-op phenomenon: it remains one of the single greatest, highest-earning, and most influential vertical shoot-’em-ups ever created in arcade history.

Platform Context & Gaming Environment: The Cranassian Invasion

Raiden was housed in an imposing upright and cocktail table arcade cabinet with explosive fighter jet artwork. In the year 2090, Earth is invaded by the extraterrestrial Cranassians: world scientists construct two experimental high-altitude supersonic combat aircraft, the red and blue Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighters (Fighting Thunder).

The control panel featured 2-player simultaneous stations equipped with an 8-way joystick and two buttons: FIRE and BOMB.

Popularity & Cultural Standing: The Vertical Shmup Legend

Raiden was an astronomical commercial and critical blockbuster across arcades worldwide throughout 1990, 1991, and 1992, reigning as the undisputed #1 vertical shooter in arcades across Japan, North America, and Europe. When converted to the SNES, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation, and PC, it sold millions of copies, launching a multi-decade franchise.

Gameplay Mechanics & Technical Innovations

Raiden established the golden grammar of vertical shmup design:

  • Dual Primary Weapon Cycling: Collect color-cycling weapon power-up crystals:
    • Red Weapon (Wide Vulcan Cannon): Expands from a dual forward gun into an 8-way multi-directional bullet storm covering the entire screen.
    • Blue Weapon (Plasma Laser): Concentrates continuous, piercing blue laser beams that vaporize heavy armored tanks and dreadnoughts in seconds!
  • Sub-Missile Arsenal (Homing vs. Nuclear): Equip secondary missiles: Homing Missiles (H / Yellow) that automatically track aerial targets, or high-damage Nuclear Missiles (M / Green) that blast forward into ground structures.
  • The Delayed-Fuse Thermonuclear Bomb: Drop a heavy yellow bomb that takes a split second to detonate in a massive expanding blast wave, rewarding tactical anticipation and screen-clearing defense.
  • Eight Diverse Earth & Alien Battlefields: Battle through pastoral countryside farmlands, ruined cityscapes, coastal naval harbors, volcanic craters, and the Cranassians’ bio-organic mothership.

Historical Legacy & Archival Preservation

Raiden is permanently inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame and the Smithsonian Institution. As Seibu Kaihatsu’s supreme vertical shooting triumph that founded the Raiden dynasty, its legacy is eternal.
