New Far Cry game reportedly in the works after extraction shooter spin

Ubisoft’s long‑awaited Far Cry franchise remains in limbo, yet the studio is now actively developing a fresh title while shelving a planned spin‑off.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reports that a new, “ambitious” Far Cry entry is underway, whereas the extraction shooter spin‑off has been officially cancelled. Even so, a direct sequel is unlikely to surface in the near future.

The upcoming game, codenamed Kodiak, is described as an open‑world first‑person shooter that prioritises player interaction and emergent storytelling. While the exact gameplay mechanics remain vague, the promise of a more player‑driven experience signals a shift toward greater narrative flexibility.

Henderson notes that Kodiak is built upon the foundations of the cancelled extraction shooter codenamed Maverick, which had suffered from prolonged development challenges. The new title is expected to be “really ambitious” and is projected to be several years away from release.

Far Cry 6 debuted in 2021 to a lukewarm reception, earning a 73 on Metacritic from critics and a markedly lower 5.5 from players. This mixed response has set the stage for the franchise’s longest inter‑release interval in nearly two decades, prompting fans and developers alike to hope that the next entry will be crafted with greater care to avoid repeating the shortcomings of its predecessor.

Having found genuine enjoyment in Far Cry 5, I was initially skeptical about the newer installment, which received scant praise. Though I eventually acquired it on Steam during a steep discount, my likelihood of playing remains low—yet it still outweighs the probability of engaging with the industry’s current trend toward extraction shooters.
