Marathon adds ‘experimental’ PvE experience next week, full

While the recent season‑two patch hasn’t delivered the breakthrough Bungie might have hoped for, the upcoming update is poised to satisfy a long‑standing player demand.

Set to launch on July 21, the mid‑season 1.1.5 patch for Marathon introduces the Vault Breaker experimental PvE‑only mode—a feature that has been clamored for by fans who love the game’s visuals and combat but prefer to avoid the intensity of PvP.

Bungie described Vault Breaker as a roguelite PvE journey set within the Cryo Archive, where players tackle increasingly challenging Vaults over successive runs. Earn Vault Data to enhance your Sponsored Kit or invest it in the new Vault Breaker Armory, which offers a range of weapons and items you can carry forward into other Tau Ceti escapades.

Vault Breaker is only the beginning of Marathon’s PvE roadmap. According to Bungie, items and gear collected during runs are locked until exfiltration, with only event currency and rewards available during the event window. Players should therefore focus on storing Vault Data and any critical gear needed to reach exfil.

Bungie has voiced its enthusiasm for players to jump in, eager to gather feedback and data as they polish the upcoming PvE mode set to debut in Season 3.

The key issue lies in the September launch of Marathon’s dedicated PvE mode. By that time, the market will be crowded with fresh titles—Call of Duty’s extraction mode DMZ and the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 slated for November 2027—raising concerns about timing and player attention.
