The identity of the photo’s subject has puzzled fans for nearly thirty years, a mystery that grew even more perplexing when Capcom replaced it with a Golden Retriever in the remake. The Resident Evil Wiki even dedicates an entire page to the enigma, simply titled “Jill’s Friend.”

So the mystery is solved: the man on Jill’s desk is Kyle MacLachlan. After years of speculation, the hunt is finally over.

After months of combing through countless Japanese publications, a user named Morio on X finally cracked the identity of a long‑mysterious image: it turns out to be Kyle MacLachlan. By superimposing the game’s pixelated version onto a promotional shot of the actor, the resemblance becomes unmistakable.

But the investigation didn’t stop there. Morio uncovered a series of additional photographs scattered throughout the Raccoon City police station. Among them are images of the trio from Back to the Future III, a snapshot of Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster from Maverick, and a portrait of Winona Ryder from The Age of Innocence. In the Resident Evil II remake, each of these iconic shots was swapped out.
