Microsoft Confirms Windows Update Downgrades Latest GPU Drivers to Older Versions

Microsoft has announced a significant tweak to Windows Update that will prevent the installation of outdated driver versions in most scenarios. While the company admits that a complete overhaul of the Windows 11 update engine is required to fully resolve the issue, it has rolled out interim fixes to reduce user frustration.

Starting this year, drivers for new hardware will employ a dual‑part HWID system combined with device‑specific hardware identifiers (CHID). This refinement will enable Windows Update to more accurately determine when a driver should be applied to a particular machine. Microsoft says the new mechanism will enter a testing phase from April 2026 to September 2026, with full deployment expected between Q4 2026 and Q1 2027.

Analysis: The phased rollout of HWID‑CHID integration signals Microsoft’s intent to tighten driver management, potentially reducing the frequency of driver regressions that have historically plagued Windows users. By aligning driver updates more closely with hardware profiles, the company may also streamline support cycles and improve overall system stability.

Although this development is encouraging, it comes with a caveat: the rule applies only to drivers released from now on for new devices. Existing drivers remain susceptible to the same problematic downgrades, and the current scope is limited to graphics cards (GPUs). There is no announced timeline for extending this benefit to other critical components such as Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi adapters.

To further assist users, Microsoft plans to simplify the technical naming conventions of drivers, making it easier to identify and remove problematic updates from the system.
