Sega is re-releasing the original Sonic Genesis games on $100 cartridges

Sega is reviving the classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles for a premium collector’s edition, bundling the original Genesis/Mega Drive game and its sequel into a $100 anniversary package.

Scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2026, the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge Collection will be playable on NTSC Sega Genesis consoles, preserving the authentic hardware experience.

The original Sonic is housed in a translucent blue cartridge shell, while the sequel arrives in a striking orange case. Iam8bit reports that one in eight units will feature exclusive “Chaos Emerald” variants, adding a layer of rarity for enthusiasts.

Each edition comes wrapped in a custom-designed case and includes a full-color instruction booklet with restored artwork and a fresh foreword, offering both nostalgia and new context for fans.

The games are now available for pre‑order, with shipments slated to roll out in staggered waves throughout the year.

Iam8bit has once again tapped into nostalgia, rolling out a new line of “legacy” cartridges that bring beloved classics such as Street Fighter II, Mega Man X, Earthworm Jim, and the Disney titles Aladdin and The Lion King to modern hardware.

These retro re‑releases were unveiled during a special 35th‑anniversary livestream on Tuesday, where VGC had the opportunity to interview Sonic Team chief Takashi Iizuka. The conversation shed light on Sega’s ambitious plans for the milestone year and the company’s partnership with Pico Park.

The upcoming Classic Sonic Collection will feature Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Superstars, while the Modern Sonic Collection will bundle Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Sonic Forces. Both sets will hit physical shelves in October and will retail for $49.99 USD.

Sega has unveiled an ambitious campaign to commemorate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th birthday, promising a year‑long series of digital retrospectives, fan gatherings, exclusive merchandise drops, pop‑up museum displays, art installations, live concerts, and a brand‑new narrative podcast that will dive into Sonic’s storied past.

The digital content will chronicle Sonic’s evolution over the decades, offering fans a curated look at the character’s iconic moments and design milestones.

Meanwhile, the new podcast will weave Sonic’s adventures into a compelling narrative, providing listeners with fresh insights into the beloved hedgehog’s journey.
