Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director says his next game won’t be a remake, but could be a ‘grand-scale’ RPG

Director Naoki Hamaguchi of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has revealed his future ambitions, hinting at the next creative venture he hopes to tackle.

The trilogy’s concluding chapter, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is slated for a Spring 2027 launch. Departing from the PlayStation‑centric exclusivity of its predecessors, the title will debut simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC, offering a broader audience access from day one.

With its arrival, the decade‑long saga that began with the 2015 E3 announcement will conclude, freeing Hamaguchi to pursue new creative endeavors after more than ten years of dedicated work.

During a Game Informer interview, Hamaguchi acknowledged fan interest in a Final Fantasy VI remake, yet clarified that should the project materialize—a possibility the PR team described as hypothetical—he would prefer another developer to helm it.

He said he’s currently immersed in polishing Final Fantasy VII Revelation, determined to ensure the entire Remake saga is released in flawless condition.

When asked about the possibility of directing a Final Fantasy VI remake, he chuckled, noting the community’s enthusiasm. “I hear a lot of chatter online, but whether it’s me or someone else, I believe a fresh creative vision might serve the project better.”

Instead, Hamaguchi hinted at a new, ambitious RPG project—though he left open whether it would belong to the Final Fantasy franchise or a different series entirely. He emphasized Square Enix’s proven capability to deliver large‑scale titles that resonate globally.

While fans may harbor a range of hopes, I personally yearn to embrace a fresh RPG venture beyond the current project—whether that means another Final Fantasy installment or a brand‑new IP. The outcome remains uncertain, but a departure from the familiar series would present a thrilling challenge for me. Whatever direction the studio chooses, I trust fans will share in the anticipation.

Last week, Hamaguchi admitted that he has replayed Final Fantasy VII Revelation roughly forty times, and that a particular Cloud scene consistently moved him to tears.
