Vampire Survivors Dev Threatens Fortnite Collab Over Epic’s AI Stance

During its State of Unreal keynote, Epic Games unveiled a slew of new initiatives, one of which announced a forthcoming crossover between Fortnite and the hit indie title Vampire Survivors.

Beyond the crossover tease, Epic made a bold statement about the future of game creation: it is fully embracing generative AI as a core component of its development pipeline. This stance could have ripple effects for smaller studios, such as Vampire Survivors’ creator poncle, who may need to adapt to a landscape increasingly driven by AI-assisted workflows.

In tandem with the live event, Epic released an extensive blog post titled “The Road to Unreal Engine 6.” The article, while concise, is packed with enthusiasm for how generative AI can streamline game development and simplify the transition to UE6.

“When it comes to model‑assisted creation, we see generative AI tightening iteration cycles and cutting the time spent on manual level design, character rigging, particle system setup, skinning, and lighting adjustments,” Epic explained. “Unreal Engine is uniquely positioned as the efficient, cross‑platform, high‑fidelity runtime that will continue to underpin the world’s most ambitious games.”

After today’s announcement that Epic is employing generative AI to craft a wide range of game assets—including new characters for Fortnite—developer poncle has taken a cautious stance. In a comment on the Vampire Survivors subreddit, the studio said it is “currently reviewing” its partnership with Fortnite and will update the community if any decisions are made.

Epic has reiterated its confidence in large language models and generative AI tools such as Claude and Codex, arguing that they will become indispensable for accelerating content creation while preserving the artistic control developers require.

Unreal Engine 5 has already become a staple in modern game development, and many developers anticipate that Unreal Engine 6 will follow a similar trajectory. However, the enthusiastic endorsement of generative AI—particularly by a major publisher—raises concerns for studios like poncle, who may feel pressured to adopt these technologies or risk falling behind.
