Sega Announces Remaster of All 223 Sonic the Comic Issues

A dedicated fan initiative is currently in motion to digitally remaster every one of the 223 issues of the iconic 1990s UK comic, Sonic the Comic.

Originally launched by Fleetway, the comic ran from May 1993 until January 2002, delivering 223 installments—39 of which were reprints—before the series concluded.

While the flagship attraction was, unsurprisingly, the adventures of Sonic and his companions, the publication also showcased a diverse lineup of Sega titles, featuring strips from Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Eternal Champions, Kid Chameleon, Decap Attack, Ecco the Dolphin, Wonder Boy, and Shining Force.

Despite cultivating a loyal fanbase across the UK, the series has never seen a reprint from Egmont, the company that later acquired Fleetway and its extensive catalog.

For years fans have accessed scanned copies of the beloved comic, but the team at Sega magazine Sega Mania has now taken the bold step of remastering the entire print run.

Every issue of the Sonic the Comic can be downloaded for free from the Sega Mania website, as the project is positioned as a community preservation effort.

The remastering process is not a simple cleanup; it employs a bespoke page reconstruction technique crafted exclusively for this project. By meticulously rebuilding each page, the team enhances readability, eliminates compression artifacts, restores washed‑out colors, and delivers a polished experience optimized for modern screens and devices.

Sega Mania clarifies that its goal isn’t to produce museum‑grade archival reproductions; the restoration process may introduce subtle tweaks to artwork, lettering, or colour schemes.

Instead, the team aims to make these classic comics more readable, more accessible, and more enjoyable for contemporary audiences while staying true to the original spirit of the publications.

The project is entirely independent of Sega or Fleetway, and is driven purely by a love for the original material, with no claim of ownership over the content.

To bring the entire Sonic the Comic collection to fans, the company plans to release a freshly remastered edition each weekday—from Monday through Friday—until every issue is available for download.
