Jason Schreier Warns XBOX Bloodbath Will Devastate Studios & Staff

Microsoft is gearing up to launch a sweeping overhaul of its Xbox division as the company approaches the close of its fiscal year on June 30. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reports that the cuts will hit the entire organization hard, and that the studios whose futures are now in jeopardy represent only a small fraction of the full scope of the changes.

Schreier has confirmed that Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory are currently in talks with Xbox to determine their next steps. However, he cautions that there are additional teams facing uncertainty and that many negotiations remain underway. “Those three studios are just the tip of the iceberg,” he says in a video explaining how the division reached its current state.

According to insiders, some industry observers have described the impending changes as a “bloodbath,” hinting at a harsh, rapid restructuring. While the full extent of layoffs, closures, and reorganization remains unclear, the tone suggests a decisive, if brutal, approach.

According to the reporter, one of Xbox’s most persistent challenges has been the constant shift in corporate strategy. Studios such as Double Fine, Compulsion Games, and Ninja Theory launched their latest titles when Microsoft’s focus was on enriching Game Pass, taking creative risks, and adding diverse experiences to the catalogue without demanding immediate profitability.

The acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the plateauing growth of Game Pass, and Microsoft’s new push for higher margins have since altered those conditions. Schreier argues that some studios are now being penalized for following the directives they received years ago, when their projects were built around a very different business model.

Adding to the uncertainty is the transition of Phil Spencer to the helm of the division. His successor, Asha Sharma, has repeatedly used the term “reset” to describe the new phase for Xbox. Final decisions are expected in the coming weeks, but Schreier stresses that the studios mentioned so far represent only a fragment of a much larger reorganization.
