Star Fox 64 Art Director Reveals Remake Plans

Fans who have already experienced the Star Fox demo on the Switch 2 will recognize it as a stunning visual overhaul, breathing new life into the classic N64 title in ways that were once unimaginable.

Takaya Imamura, the art director behind Star Fox 64 and the creative mind steering the series’ aesthetic direction, has openly shared how the remake has moved him. Speaking on X, he explained that the hardware constraints of the N64 made it hard to distinguish between pre‑rendered imagery and real‑time CGI, a challenge that left many players confused about the true capabilities of the console.

He added that the Switch 2’s enhanced graphics “bring tears to my eyes,” highlighting how far the technology has come since the days when even the PlayStation’s beautiful cutscenes were seen as a testament to a console’s power rather than a mere artistic choice.

With Star Fox 64, our goal was to craft demo scenes and presentations that matched the visual splendor of pre‑rendered cutscenes while still embracing the distinct charm of real‑time graphics. The resulting graphical enhancements are so striking that they bring tears to my eyes.

Earlier, Imamura-san admitted that although he appreciates Fox McCloud’s design in the new game, he personally prefers the cinematic portrayal. Just a reminder—there isn’t a dedicated Star Fox movie; the character actually appears in The Super Mario Galaxy movie, a cameo that Nintendo revealed with an official poster before its release.

Even if you haven’t experienced the demo yet, the trailers and footage released so far showcase the magnitude of the upgrade. In terms of gameplay, it largely mirrors the 1997 experience, with additional content added to enrich the overall package.
