Kingdom Hearts IV has finally arrived, and while the series’ loyal fans will no doubt be buzzing, the latest installment is taking a decidedly more realistic visual approach than ever before. The game’s new realm, Quadratum, is a stylized, almost dystopian version of Shibuya that pushes the franchise into a photorealistic aesthetic, a departure that has sparked both excitement and concern among the community.
Over the years, the Kingdom Hearts saga has steadily increased its realism, with worlds such as the Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron featuring lifelike renditions of their live‑action counterparts. In Quadratum, however, the shift is even more pronounced: characters like Sora and the Organization XIII member Luxord appear vastly different from their earlier, more cartoonish depictions. Director Tetsuya Nomura explains that this change is intentional, aiming to underscore Quadratum’s status as an “underworld”—a fictional space that exists outside conventional reality.
