Alpine Linux has just unveiled version 3.24, bringing a host of refreshed system components such as the latest Linux kernel 6.18 and Rust 1.96. The release also introduces IPv6 support into the installer and adds automated serial‑console configuration for headless deployments, streamlining setup for server environments.
System76’s COSMIC desktop environment has finally landed in the community repository, offering an alternative to the mainstream GNOME stack. The team originally created COSMIC after finding GNOME’s feature set too restrictive and frequently incompatible with their custom extensions.
In package housekeeping, Alpine’s maintainers have migrated GTK+ 3.0 to the community repo due to its legacy status, upgraded py3‑setuptools to version 82.0.0, and removed the deprecated pkg_resources module. They also purged obsolete packages that depended on py3‑six and GTK+ 2.0, and eliminated libsoup 2 because of multiple security flaws.
Alpine Linux remains a lightweight distribution—roughly 5 MB in size—built around musl libc, BusyBox, and OpenRC. First released in 2005, it ships with its own package manager, Alpine Package Keeper (APK), and has become a staple in modern cloud deployments and software packaging pipelines.
