Velan Studios, the American studio famed for titles like Hot Wheels: Rift Rally and the shelved live‑service title Knockout City, has been confirmed as the creative force behind Nintendo’s upcoming Star Fox game.
Founded in 2016 by former Vicarious Visions talent—including the minds behind Tony Hawk’s and Skylanders—Velan has a track record of blending innovative gameplay with beloved IPs. Their previous collaboration with Nintendo on the 2020 toys‑to‑life hit Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit showcased their ability to merge physical and digital experiences.
In a statement released Tuesday, Velan expressed enthusiasm for the project: “We’ve been passionately working on this for a while, and we’re so proud to finally share it with the world: Velan Studios is the developer of Star Fox.”
“Partnering with Nintendo to bring Fox McCloud and his crew to the Nintendo Switch 2 is a true privilege,” the studio announced, underscoring the excitement surrounding the collaboration.
The upcoming Star Fox title is a faithful remake of the classic Nintendo 64 game, Star Fox 64. It is slated for release on June 25, and a playable demo has just become available on the Nintendo eShop.
In our hands‑on review, we noted that “the Star Fox crew have always operated as a mercenary unit, and emphasizing these traits makes Fox and his allies more compelling characters—an objective that appears central to this remake.”
However, while the game strives to stay true to the original’s spirit, it ultimately diverges from players’ memories, offering a fresh yet familiar experience.
