During Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote, the company unveiled a significant upgrade to its privacy‑centric cloud platform, Private Cloud Compute (PCC), marking the first time the service will operate outside Apple’s own data centers.
PCC was originally conceived to process Apple Intelligence queries that exceed the computational limits of on‑device hardware, all while ensuring that no user data is stored or exposed to Apple or third parties.
Last year, Apple broadened its Security Bounty initiative, offering up to a million dollars to researchers who uncover critical vulnerabilities in PCC, underscoring its commitment to robust security.
Until now, PCC’s infrastructure relied exclusively on Apple’s silicon. The new expansion partners with Google and NVIDIA, enabling Apple Intelligence workloads to run on Google Cloud platforms equipped with NVIDIA GPUs.
This revamped deployment incorporates NVIDIA’s Confidential Computing technology, Intel CPUs featuring TDX, and Google’s Titan chip, with Apple collaborating closely with Google to add extra safeguards beyond conventional confidential computing solutions.
Apple has announced that, even as it extends its Private Compute Cluster (PCC) to third‑party data centers, the company’s core security principles remain intact. The platform will still enforce stateless processing, prohibit privileged runtime access, prevent targetability, and maintain verifiable transparency. Apple will keep full control over the PCC software stack, ensuring that only cryptographically approved code runs on its devices.
To further harden the environment, Apple is implementing an append‑only ledger that tracks Google Cloud hardware used within the PCC fleet. This measure is designed to mitigate the risk of supply‑chain attacks by providing an immutable audit trail of the underlying infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure, Apple has partnered with Google to leverage the Gemini family of models in developing the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. These models will drive Apple Intelligence features across both on‑device and cloud workloads. For the most demanding AI workloads—such as agentic tool use and advanced reasoning—Apple will depend on the expanded PCC infrastructure hosted on Google Cloud.
The rollout of PCC on Google Cloud will gradually progress toward full protection during the summer preview phase. Consistent with past practice, Apple will release binaries for public scrutiny, supply research tools, and grant researchers access to live PCC nodes in research mode via its Security Bounty Program.
